Subscribe to RSSPakistani authorities in Abbottabad are doing their best to keep unwanted visitors away from the demolition of Osama bin Laden's former home. NBC's Annabel Roberts reports.
Pakistani security personnel on Sunday completed the demolition of the compound where al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces last May.
"The process launched for demolishing the compound on Saturday evening has been completed on Sunday night. The whole structure of the building has been razed to the ground. It actually took some time as the process of removing demolition and removing the wreckage was going on same to same," a senior security official said in Abbottabad.
The official, who requested anonymity, said precautionary measures, including a curfew and heavy security around the compound, were taken to avoid any problems during the demolition. When asked why the demolition took place now, the official told NBC News that the razing of the structure had been planned soon after bin Laden's death.
"A number of meetings had taken place since the May 2 operation for demolishing the building, but the compound could not be demolished earlier due to difference in opinions among the officials concerned. It was finally decided to demolish the building and the timing for the process was chosen Saturday night," the official said.

A senior police officer said that an unannounced curfew in the town remained in place until late Sunday night.
To secure the area, Pakistan army soldiers and police personnel were deployed in large numbers to the area.
"The recent rockets' attack by unknown people on military installations in Abbottabad city had created serious concerns among the military authorities and local administration there," the police officer said.
The police officer, who requested anonymity, said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Barrister Masood Kausar was scheduled to visit Abbottabad during the day to see the demolition, but later canceled his trip for unknown reasons.
Local residents in Bilal Town said security measures were later relaxed when the last portion of the compound was razed to the ground using heavy machinery.
Future plans for the lot include the construction of "a nice park" -- with green areas and benches -- that will be built "within a month," a senior government official told NBC News.

Since it was already reported in the article "Report: Bin Laden Already Dead", on December 26, 2001, from Fox News, how could Osama Bin Laden have been living in that house last year?
Pakistan is trying to erase the evidence of their duplicity by destroying the house. I can guarantee that some in the ISI knew exactly where bin Laden was living. At least they did not turn it into some kind of museum for the al-Qaeda faithful to gather around as a shrine. They are trying to eliminate the evidence of the collusion of their ISI with al-Qaeda
@hungrymoose - If you really had access to such a report, you would post a link to it. Just because you can make something up about a report does not make it true. I think you need to go to the doctor and have your meds adjusted.
I would like for President Obama to release pictures to prove that he is really dead. The American people deserve to have this peace of mind. 1) That he is really dead and 2) that we haven't been duped.

You made your point. However, I didn't set out to insult anybody. I surely didn't mention anything about the US Navy Seals. I merely asked to see the photos. They are, after all, paid for by the American taxpayers who deserve some peace of mind as well. Don't you think. How many trillions did we pay in the hunt for OBL. Don't you think we need some closure on this issue.

Sorry buddy, but this nobody will continue to ask for the release of the pictures whether you think I am insulting the Seals or not. It has nothing to do with the Seals but everything to do with not trusting politicians. We the People are just as deserving as the Navy Seals.
As long as public funds are paying for the trip we deserve all materials produced for full disclosure. I am truly sorry you see something as freedom of information as an insult.

Ed, after full disclosure it doesn't matter what anybody says. The US would have done the right thing by the people. I am talking about freedom of information and you are talking about whether 'me and my ilk' would cry fake. No matter what I say you will oppose it. So lets leave it at that.
After having paid trillions, DNA and picture evidence, should be a part of the full disclosure.
Plus one to Randall Flagg. For some, no amount of proof will ever be enough. If they could stick their finger into the bullet hole in OBL's head, someone would still ask if the bullet was actually the cause of death or question whether the body felt more like rubber than human tissue. Paranoia knows no end.

On one post you would want to have facts checked. Except in this case we can not check the facts, can we. Making full disclosure even that more important in order to show integrity in our actions.

I understand/agree w/ Mr. Jacobs to a degree, the government should have given us something more than "their word for it", since everyone knows politicians lie like the laziest of dogs. And the reasoning for not showing us pics ("We don't want to upset his followers") showed a sad lack of consideration for the American people. So basically the only people who handled this mess right are the ones who put the hole in Osama's head; at least we can be proud of them.
PS: The only "proof" we have that he's dead is the fact his followers aren't denying it. Which is actually pretty good proof, considering they'd love nothing more than to prove America to be liars.
Peter--the picture I saw on network tv showed bin Laden with a bullet hole in the middle of his forehead--proof enough for me.
They are JERKS..its a great tourist attraction could have made a bundle with a house tour.
But I know they feel like AZZHOLES having that happen..but they are true AZZHOLES no matter what.. so why tear it down?
Actually surprised that Pakistan demolished the compound. I thought they would have left it for the next terrorist who needed to hide out.

Why did Fox publish it? Who knows, but it supported the belief that there was no point in hunting for him further. Fox of course has been historically famous for publishing all sorts of things from unreliable sources, blogs, etc. The only thing the seems to matter is that it says something they want to message. In this case, Bush didn't fail because Bin Laden died and then therefore, continuing to search for him was pointless.

1. pics won't matter. I believe our SEALS did the job. If our govt. was going to lie to us, don't you think they could easily Photoshop a dead Bin Laden? You wouldn't believe the photos if you saw them.
2. I'm sure Pakistan tore down the compound so that it DIDN'T become a terrorist tourist site. Same as the Russians demolished Hitler's bunker.
3. Did Pakistan know Bin Laden was there? Maybe or maybe not. But Musharraf (former pres. of Pakistan) made an interesting point during an interview I heard him give. The United States has the largest security/intelligence organization in the world. Yet, for over a year, we had 19 men in this country learning to fly large planes (but not take them off or land them) and nobody knew or did anything about it. So, did the Pakistani govt. know Bin Laden was in Pakistan? Hard to say. But after hearing Musharraf's interview, I'm more keeping more of an open mind on the subject. (Of course, I'm sure there are those who think our govt. knew the terrorists were here and let 9 11 happen ... the same people who wouldn't believe pics of a dead Bin Laden.)

john i agree with your first two points but in order to even learn how to fly you kind of have to learn how to take off in order to even get in the air and land so you dont crash and burn on your solo flight.

at go illini - wrong. remember the course of events. Their plan (successful) was to have someone else (certified pilots) take off. Then, the terrorists over-powered the cockpit and flew into their targets. They never planned to take off or land. How could they take off? They weren't airline pilots. No one would have let them into the cockpit or given them clearance! I believe one of the flight schools even reported them to the FBI because they had said they weren't concerned about take off or landing, they just wanted to fly. That definitely should have raised some alarms.
I'm not sure how much more proof you need.
We have pics of a downed helicopter in a compound in Pakistan. We have Pakistanis cleaning up the after effects. Mourning terrorists were reported. None have contested the claim.

There were picture in foreign papers of Bin Laden with a bullet hole in his forehead and looking rather completely dead. They weren't released in this country but are available if you know how to search for them.

Although, I agree with Patric and enjoy his witty statements. I do not like that he keeps insulting you every step of the way. I am a tax payer but I think we are better off without the pictures. The reason I say that is because it may invoke more terrorism. I see Osama Bin Laden as a cult leader, and I am sure many of the officials see it the same way. I think releasing pictures of a man dying could ignite untapped emotions of some of his fanatics. Which may give his fanatics a reason to commit terrorism out of revenge. Besides, you should know pictures could be fabricated. If you want I can give you a picture of him getting shot by a SEAL, though, I can't promise if it is real. Its clear OSAMA died or why else would Pakistan go to such lengths to demolish a house that the 1% of Pakistanis can own?

This compound is a black eye for the Pakistani gov't no matter how you look at it. Either they knowingly harbored bin Laden or they had no clue he was there. Outrageous either way. It is also the place where the US conducted a surgical military assault on their sovereign soil. I am not surprised they tore it down ASAP. We don't need it standing. The intelligence has been removed and we can create our own monuments to Seal Team Six within our borders. We don't need some sort of sick shrine for future terrorists. Good riddance!

Thats it, destroy all evedince. There would have been Bin Laden DNA there, if he were actually there. While I don't want to insult any Navy Seals, I remember reading a small article, shortly after the alleged Bin Ladden killing, where several members of Seal Team Six were killed in a helicopter crash. Then you never heard another word about it. Anyone remember that? Seems mighty fishy to me. Maybe they decided they would NOT be complicit in some politcal hoax. Hard to say as no one here has any factual information on what really happened in either case. Funny world we live in, and not funny like Ha Ha.
Your correct..there was a crash with Team Six Navy Seals who died..but do you know how many Seals are part of Team Six??? None were part of the Bin-Laden mission just to say..they were all back in the states when that crash happen..I can't prove this..but can you prove me wrong..doubt it!
Did you even read that article, the Navy Seals that were killed in the helo crash were members of Team 6, but DID NOT take part in the killing of Bin Laden.

Let's see now, how many times did Bin Laden die before "Seal Team 6" did the job the last time? Is there any chance he may die again? Poor guy, it would seem once would be enough. I would not like to die more than once even if I were the world's #1 terrorist that the FBI did not want to interview regarding involvement in 9-11. To die more than once would pretty much disrupt what I thought I knew about "not coming back."
They ought to drop 1 big atom bomb on all of them over there like they did in Japan and get rid of the whole darn bunch of them,then we wouldn't have to worry about terrorist.
