Gunman kills two US Army officers in Afghan Interior Ministry

NBC's Atia Abawi reports.

Updated at 5:36 p.m. ET: A gunman shot dead two American military officials inside the heavily guarded Afghan Interior Ministry in the center of the capital Kabul on Saturday in an alarmingly brazen attack, as protests raged across the country for a fifth day over the burning of the Muslim holy book at a NATO base.

The Americans, who were U.S. Army officers serving as advisers to the Afghan security forces, were sitting at their desks inside the government ministry building when they were killed, NBC News reported. They were shot in the back of the head, Western officials speaking on condition of anonymity told The Associated Press.

U.S. officials said the assailant — who has not been identified by name or nationality — remained at large and a manhunt was under way.

Underscoring the gravity of the attack and apparent security breach, Gen. John Allen, the commander of NATO and U.S. forces in Afghanistan, ordered all NATO personnel recalled from Afghan ministries "for obvious force protection reasons."

Retired Army Gen. Barry McCaffrey offers analysis of the deaths and protests in Afghanistan.

"We are investigating the crime and will pursue all leads to find the person responsible for this attack. The perpetrator of this attack is a coward whose actions will not go unanswered," Allen said in a statement.

The U.S. servicemen — a lieutenant colonel and a major — were found dead on the floor of an office that only people who know a numerical combination can get into, Afghan and Western officials told the AP.

"There is CCTV there and special locks. The killer would have had to have the highest security (clearance) to get to the room where they were killed," an Afghan security source told Reuters.

NATO spokesman Lt. Col Jimmie Cummings said "initial reports say it was not a Western shooter." He declined to provide further information.

In an e-mail sent to Western officials in Kabul from NATO headquarters, the attack was described as “green on blue,” which is the military term used here when Afghan security forces turn their weapons on their Western military allies, The New York Times reported.

The Afghan Taliban claimed that two of their fighters had managed to enter the building in Kabul and kill four "high-ranking U.S. advisers," according to NBC News. U.S. military officials confirmed only two deaths and the Taliban claim could not be independently verified. The Taliban often exaggerate claims of responsibility for terror attacks.

Musadeq Sadeq / AP

A U.S. military convoy enters the Afghan Interior Ministry in Kabul on Saturday after a gunman killed two American advisers inside.

"Our suicide bomber Abdur Rahman along with another fighter managed to enter the interior ministry and open fire at the Americans. Before carrying out the suicide attack, Abdur Rahman told us on telephone that he had killed four high-ranking Americans. The second fighter successfully escaped the building and has joined his fighters now," the Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said in a phone call to NBC from an undisclosed location.

Military leaders and politicians haven't had much success in stopping the violence, but religious leaders have. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.

He said it was revenge for the desecration of holy Quran by the U.S. forces.

In Washington, Pentagon press secretary George Little said Defense Secretary Leon Panetta was informed of the shooting Saturday morning. "This act is unacceptable, and the United States condemns it in the strongest possible terms," Little said.

He said Afghan Defense Minister Gen. Abdul Rahim Wardak called Panetta to apologize and to offer his condolences.

"Secretary Panetta appreciated the call and urged the Afghan government to take decisive action to protect coalition forces and curtail the violence in Afghanistan after a challenging week in the country," Little's statement said. "Minister Wardak said that President (Hamid) Karzai was assembling the religious leaders, parliamentarians, justices of the Supreme Court and other senior Afghan officials to take urgent steps to do so."

In Kabul, Allen met with Afghan Interior Minister Bismillah Mohammadi, who pledged "complete cooperation in investigating today's tragedy and in taking stronger measures to protect ISAF personnel," Little said.

President Barack Obama called Allen after Saturday's shootings and the White House said the president supported the steps taken to protect U.S. service members in Afghanistan.

"We welcome President Karzai's statement ... encouraging peaceful expressions, and his call for dialogue and calm. The United States remains committed to a partnership with the government and people of Afghanistan, as we work to realize our shared goal of disrupting, dismantling and defeating al-Qaida and strengthening the Afghan state," the White House statement added.

If the shootings are linked to Afghan forces, new questions will arise about Taliban infiltration as well as their ability to secure Afghanistan once NATO combat forces withdraw in 2014.

NATO is supposed to be moving away from a combat role to an advise-and-assist mission as early as next year. That will require NATO to place more staff in ministries.

"The fact that NATO is recalling staff from ministries suggests they are worried about a deep malaise in the Afghan security forces, that they expect more of these attacks," said Kamran Bokhari at STRATFOR global intelligence firm.

Quran protests
Saturday's attack comes as tensions between the Afghans and the Americans are high following the burning of copies of the Muslim holy book at a U.S. base that sparked days of deadly protests.

At least 28 people have been killed and hundreds wounded since Tuesday, when it first emerged that Qurans and other religious materials had been thrown into a fire pit used to burn garbage at Bagram Air Field, a large U.S. base north of Kabul. Among those dead were two U.S. soldiers who were killed Thursday by one of their Afghan counterparts while a riot raged outside their base in the eastern province of Nangarhar.

President Barack Obama and other U.S. officials apologized and said the burning of Qurans was a terrible mistake, but the incident has sent thousands to the streets in this deeply religious country.

In Kunduz, the capital of Kunduz province in northeast Afghanistan, more than 1,000 protesters demonstrated. At first they were peaceful, but as the protest continued they began throwing stones at government buildings and a U.N. office, said Sarwer Hussaini, a spokesman for the provincial police. He said the police were firing into the air to try to disperse the crowd.

The U.N. confirmed in a statement that its Kunduz compound was attacked, but said all its staff in Kunduz and in the country were unhurt and accounted for. The statement thanked Afghan security forces for their quick response to the assault.

NBC News' Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube and The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

We risk our fighting men and womens lives so they have less tyranny in their life. We inadvertently burn a few books, and they start taking our lives. This would be cause for immediate withdrawal to me.We can watch the Taliban from space and drones now to take out any new terror camps.

Repost;

We inadverdently burn qurans, the people go crazy, the Taliban torture and execute people for not following strict sharia, or making a mistake, and you hear nothing. What this shows is more hate for us, than for the burning of the quran, who would protest if the Taliban burned bibles in Afghanistan,Im guessing noone, this shows the doublestandard Islamist live by. ie It is o.k to kill someone in the name of our religion, but not to burn a book? Their standards of right and wrong are surely skewed.

The problem is they do not see it that way. So the hypocrisy continues.

if the Afghans were smart they would rise up against the Taliban, not talking about the security forces we are training, I am talking about the regular citizens, they should be protesting the senseless killing and abductions by the Taliban, they will pay dearly for helping us half heartedly when the Taliban take back over once we have left. Women will be killed for "mistakes" they make according to Sharia , men will be forced to dress and look a certain way, and much more opression will continue.

The citizens of Afghanistan will regret their complacency when they had the chance to help us completely topple the Taliban, they are the reason it has not happened not our forces, time has proven without the suppport of the people no amount of weapons will help, so have fun watching your women get buried to up to their head and pelted with rocks til the die, or their nose and ears cut off for supposed adultery.

Your doublestandard toward us will lead to your country's opression, mark my words.

Make no mistake: This is exactly what the Taliban has in store for all women in Afghanistan. That isn't a statement on internal U.S. politics, it is the reality of the situation on the ground in Afghanistan.

Truer words have not been spoken, so keep directing your anger at us and not the true opressors, and see how that works for ya. We put our women and children first in our country,.you obviously put them last in yours.

2/24 Reading now two more soldiers were killed over this(quran burning) makes me sick to my stomach. Two years ago the people had my support, after this debacle,my faith in them is gone, time to leave.

Kind of amazing that the shooter wasn't caught, being a high security government area, unless it was a group with in their government. Perhaps instead of trying to build them a civilized country, we should just lower the cost of glass. Muslims are an insane group that worship the Arab pagan moon god with death and innocent blood. They are not o Abraham as they claim. Instead they are pagans that worship innocent blood sacrifice. What would you expect from a religion created by a self professed child molester (he to his wife when she was only 9 years old and he was 54). And the Muslims think he lived a perfect life, molesting children and mass murder of innocents.

We know why we're at 15 trillion ... this is why this insane thing called the 2012 GOP / Tea Bag Prez hopefuls never-ever mentions Bush ... except the last debate ... where Bush was only mentioned in terms of religious freedom ...

Again, easy concepts ...

It's funny how you refer to any GOP candidate as a Messiah considering it liberals like you that thought Obama was the great political messiah in 2008 who brought hope and said he was going to change this country for the better. Let's see - we're now further in debt than we were when Bush was in office - in fact, Obama has more than doubled in ONE term what took the Bush administration EIGHT YEARS to create. And let's not forget - who was in control of Congress during Bush's second term...that's right DEMONcrats. Obama has also enacted a healthcare policy that is unconstitutional - forcing Americans to buy something they may not want...and then fining them if they refuse. How's that change working out for ya'?

Fact: Bush was president when the major financial institutions were giving out HIGH RISK loans to the american people, and he DID NOTHING about it

Fact: Bush spent the surplus that was given to him from Clinton.

Fact: Bushes tax policies favored the rich and if extended will continue to favor the rich.

Fact: OBAMAs health care policy is intended to cover the 40 MILLION americans who do not have health care coverage. You do realize, that without this health care policy, we are still paying for them anyway?

Fact: BUSH made it so the Federal Government cannot negotiate the cost of prescription drugs through medicare. Which basically means, the drug companies can CHARGE whatever they want, and we PAY for it.

Fact: BUSH was a complete and utter failure. Obama may not be doing everything right, but I'd rather have someone in the office who is not a complete liar and a war criminal.

Fact: We are now paying for BUSH failures as president. His 1.5 TRILLION $$$ war of 'lies' in Iraq is now coming do isn't it?

FACT: When will the bill be due for Obama's doubling down of the deficit? By the way...it is DUE not do.

Fact: Bush was president when the major financial institutions were giving out HIGH RISK loans to the american people, and he DID NOTHING about it

FACT: Where is the outrage on the left with Chris Dodd and Barney Frank pushing legislation forward to "equal the playing field" to low income individuals and qualifying them on loans through Freedie Mac and Fannie Mae regardless of their financial standing, no money down loans that the banks were FORCED to give? Do your due diligence and research what the amount of loans that had to go out through Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae to potentially unqualified individuals. Bush had nothing to do with the local mechanic going and getting three mortgages to run flips and make a profit and then default due to the lack of sales.

Fact: Bush spent the surplus that was given to him from Clinton.

FACT: There wasn't a true surplus because it wasn't applied to the current debt, also...who was in charge of the Congress while this was happening and the spending was controlled...it wasn't the Democrats.

Fact: Bushes tax policies favored the rich and if extended will continue to favor the rich.

FACT: The "rich" pay a majority of the taxes for the country already while 48% of Americans after they get their taxes back pay either nothing at all or next to nothing.

Fact: OBAMAs health care policy is intended to cover the 40 MILLION americans who do not have health care coverage. You do realize, that without this health care policy, we are still paying for them anyway?

FACT: With the health care policies from Obama, they are finding out that the smaller programs are already doubling in price...where do you think that is going to put the economy in 2014 when the larger programs go into effect...bankruptcy. By that time the cost will have tripled if not quadrupled.

Fact: BUSH made it so the Federal Government cannot negotiate the cost of prescription drugs through medicare. Which basically means, the drug companies can CHARGE whatever they want, and we PAY for it.

FACT: Those on Medicare coverage could not get grade A medications that were on the market thereby blocking them from getting some of the necessary medication necessary to live. The only medications they could get were the knockoff's, any unavailable medicine was unattainable and had to be paid for out of pocket.

Fact: BUSH was a complete and utter failure. Obama may not be doing everything right, but I'd rather have someone in the office who is not a complete liar and a war criminal.

FACT: The president is not the only sole person responsible for this country going to war, if Congress did not research accordingly and get the correct documents then it is an issue for all who signed the go ahead for it.

Do yourself a favor and get off the Kool-aid train. I did not agree with everything Bush may have done, but like I said then and like I say now...it isn't one individuals fault or one individuals ability to destroy or correct a situation that is out of their control.

So easy to blame Bush for everything and then claim Obama is doing a great job. Friggen hypocrites.

1) Democrats voted for both wars, including Dianne Feinstein who was on the Senate Intelligence Committee. And the total cost to date (from 2003) of Iraq is about the same as that WASTED $860 billion the Democrats rammed through congress in 2009 that was supposed to keep unemployment from going above 8%. Last time I checked, Obama was still in office and we are STILL in Afghanistan. You liberals bragged about us leaving Iraq and your Dear Leader Obama made it happen, but it was Bush's plan that was approved by Congress in 2008 when Bush was still president. MAKE UP YOUR MINDS on selective "facts" people!

2) Democrats pushed the "Fair Housing" legislation to offer home loans to losers and the "less fortunate" which ran through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The Bush administration in 2004 tried to warn Congress that more regulations were needed on those two entities, but none other than Democrat Barney Frank said, and I quote, "these two entities...are not in any financial difficulty." Blaming the GOP on that is laughably pathetic and delusional. But that's you liberals.

3) Obamacare has ALREADY caused our health insurance premiums to rise when we were told THEY WOULD NOT GO UP. And this is irrespective of the fact Nanny Pelosi said it would create 400,000 new jobs "almost immediately."

4) Newt's GOP-run House of Representatives worked with Clinton to balance the budget (dragged him to the bargaining table is more like it). And the budget is NEVER really "balanced" because we ALWAYS have a deficit. And Obama has deficit spent more in THREE YEARS than in ALL of Bush's EIGHT.

Now with some FACTS rammed down you liberals' throats, let's move on to some fun facts about the teleprompter reading Community Divider In Chief:

The Liberal Credo:

I am a Liberal Progressive….

My purpose is to feel good and righteous thoughts,

My goal is make others believe I care; though I often do not participate, but often judge others for there not doing so.

I am a Liberal Progressive….

My heroes are flawed and I see it not, for their faults were of good intentions, but, the results of my idols, though unimpressive, will remain in my soul as worthy attempts at something wished for…. and the hope, not the deed, is all that matters.

I Am a Liberal Progressive…

I think therefore I am superior. My values will change daily, for core beliefs are fluid and must not impede my growth…. It is the feeling that matters and not the deed.

I am a liberal Progressive….

Those who oppose me are ignorant…I am superior and enlightened, and my absence of faith only strengthens my feelings, and feelings are everything.

I am a liberal Progressive…

The less fortunate are my tools…. their absence of my worth…. and are everyone's responsibility but mine…. for, I think, therefore I care. I will strive to cast guilt on all who disagree, while preaching openness as a vessel of communication.

I am a Liberal Progressive…

I hate God, and those who worship him. My lord is myself, and I know best how to solve the ills of that which I condemn, only myself will not be lowered to that end…yet, I say I care and that is enough.

I am a Liberal Progressive….

I will defend all that is comfortable and fight all that is difficult. The enemy of my lifestyle is the one who does not agree with my caring thoughts. Without my opinion, there can be no openness.

I am a Liberal Progressive….

I will follow the rules of anything that best describes my emotions. My heart is filled with my perceived sorrow of those who are victims, and though I bleed for them, the fact that I care, is enough to put me above them. I care, and that is all I need to do, to be righteous. I expect others will help them…..my feelings are enough to satisfy my heart. And I can do no more, nor do I need too.

I am a Liberal Progressive…

Whatever I feel is what is real. The baseless instincts of responsibility are a burden on my brother, for he is due, without merit, and my feelings and his need will be rewarded with unearned but due riches.

I am a Liberal Progressive….

I am allowed to criticize and defame all who disagree with my life. The sun is my God and the Moon my mother, beyond that…all else is irrelevant, until I decide it matters.

I am a Liberal Progressive…

You cannot harm me, but can praise me…in praise, I will accept you as a subordinate, but never equal…for you can never understand my "feelings".

My world is all that matters and those who deny it are racists and bigots. I am perfect.

I am a Liberal Progressive….

If I run naked through a Christian church, it is their hate that will not accept it, but, when a Godly person attempts to display a moral cross of judgment on my parade…I will strike him down as a bigot. Only I can make right, the truth.

I am a Liberal Progressive….

I love life….up to and when, it interferes with my own….I will not allow a cell mass to dictate my choice of movies and music….for my future is what matters…and my happiness is above a genetic mistake.

I am a Liberal Progressive….

Liberals/Democrats/progressives are by nature liars. The nature of their beliefs drives and sustains this tendency.

The liberal philosophies exhibited by many disconsolate, deluded individuals in the U.S.A and around the world are not viable in reality. I truly wish these philosophies were innocuous in nature; however, they are quite detrimental to the well being of the various peoples of the world. There are three reasons that liberals persist in their delusions despite said philosophies obvious detriment to the people of the world: ignorance, apathy, and greed.

Many liberals are usually well meaning but highly analphabetic cretins who have been deluded into following unsound philosophies by their peers. The left is comprised of people of questionable intellect and little or no ability to elevate themselves above the mindless droning of the masses.

Liberals practice beliefs and behaviors that are harmful to themselves and others. They do this knowingly but they simply do not care that their actions are harmful as long as they are allowed instant gratification of whatever they are feeling at the moment.

The upper liberal echelon consists of malicious power seekers who prey on the weak and ignorant while spreading their destructive filth for the sole purposes of prolonging their pathetic grasp on political power.

Regardless of whether a leftist is driven by ignorance, apathy, or greed, they all have one thing in common: they lie. The ignorant liberal lies either out of ignorance or to preserve self-delusional beliefs; the apathetic leftist lies to excuse his lifestyle; and the malicious progressive leader lies to keep his power base apathetic and ignorant.

Yeah that's you to a T there, exotix.

Yep, these are the same Taliban that Obama wants to sit down with at the negotiating table. No doubt Obama will broker some kind of deal with them that will entail many American (taxpayer) dollars advertised as some form of aid. Aid that will be used by them to further their murderous proclivities.

NEWSVINE.................Someone calls a Democrat a Demoncrat and their post is collapsed, but when the word teabagger or right wing nut case is used the post is not collapsed. Why can't you be more fair when monitoring the post. I have never read so many anti Republican and Tea Party post as I have here on MSNBC and Newsvine. As long as all agree with the Liberals and the Democrats you're and alright person but as soon as someone disagrees the name calling flies. I am not saying that the Republican or the Tea Party supporters don't name call, but it sure seems to be more of the Liberals and the Democrats slinging the mud. I guess the freedom of speech that they seem to scream so loud about only applies when they agree with it otherwise your comment is deleted or collapsed. So one sided! Oh and yes I do know this is a liberal democrat site.

Nerotix; Truly amazing looking at your past posts how you relate everything and I mean everything lol, negative back to the "neocons" "right wing christian jihadists" then come on here and chide others for attacking Obama, or Dems, when you are just as bad if not worse. You Are a living doublestandard, and suffer from an unhealthy fixation on the Conservative party.

You politicize everything and show no compassion for the soldiers we have lost in this article, you just use it to further berate a political party, that you are scarily obsessed with. Take a look in the mirror sir, and you might see the same traits in you, that you rail against daily.ie Look inward not outward to see your true self, then I would suggest professional help.

I don't see the big-deal ... he was assuming his 2nd Amendment *Remedies* the Tea Baggers assured was Founding Father specific for anybody who hates anybody else ... see Palins' Blood Libel rant after the Tucson massare for further proof

This is your response to the article "Gunman kills 3 wounds 1 at NC lumber yard" If you do not seee the big deal in others needlessly dying or being cut down in the prime of their life, then please take the advice I give look inward, and seek help sir.

Where are the zillions of apologies from Karzai, when our US/Ally Military Troops are recklessly being killed by the wild animals that live in his country.

Frankly, we have given this Government too much, too much of our Soldier's blood, too much of our compassion protecting his a-------------, The Taliban's; and their war tribe citizens.

Karzai doesn't care. He is a donkey, brained innate.

The Quran. That book doesn't mean anything. They can't read!

You need to get real ... the insane right-wing has been raging war on Libs since McCarthy ... if not the gilded-age conservatives who caused the first great depression and it was the Dems/Libs who got us out of it .... and the (neo)-conservatives called Dems/Libs socialists / communists / national socialist fascists back then just as today ...

Todays insane right-wing doesn't even bother with much more than *Death to Libs* as their call to arms ... they want America to Die ... (see Bush & Cheney and the neocon manifestos)

So your emotionalism is noted ... now pick a side ... Neo-Teabagger or Dem/Lib or Paulie (never mind Paulie has an (R) before it ) ...

The end is at nigh ... so sayeth your Messiahs ... this wacked-out insane thing called 2012 GOP / Tea Bag Prez hopefuls who are now more *Death do us Part* than Beckerhead, Fatbo, inSanity, Palin and the entire right-wing media circus of hate ... sad.

One thing for sure, there are two groups of people that love Obama ..... One is the Communists, because obama is doing more harm to this country than if they nuked us ....... and Two.... Muslims love him because of his muslim name, and his financial backing to murderous muslim groups, and his destruction of this country under the pretext of "hope and change".

We got the Change, but we have no Hope anymore as long as he is alive.

The democrat party has changed into a Marxist Socialist organization that will financially ruin this country and its showing its ugly head more every day.

Now 15 trillion in debt and obama has already spent the budget money thru 2014, and still has promoted more and more spending and more and more entitlements for the non working thugs he represents.

He is the most disgusting, arrogant, ignorant jerk we have ever had for a president, and he should be taken out to the wood shed and have his communist ass beaten to a pulp for what he is doing to the American people and our economy.

Hey obama, Socialism does not work, do you not see what is happening to Greece? Do we have to go down the same road where no one works and you punish the people that do?

You now have 120 million more people on government subsidies than we had in 1986 and your growing it larger every day.

Why do you pick on the people that have worked hard and make a little money and pay the bulk of the taxes paid in this country, and have half of the people living here not paying any taxes at all???? You call that fair???

Thats why your nothing but a Marxist and your ass is thru in 2012, so continue to take every vacation you can this year until your slimy ass is thrown out of office .... and good riddance.

See my above commentary as to why the world now calls you a neo-teabag minion / zombie of the *Right Wing Party of Hate & Death* ...

Fatbo simply calls you *retards*

Sorry, I will not consider him "my" POTUS when he broke his oath of office. And those that defend the man after his doing so are not Patriots in any fashion. President Clinton was impeached for getting a BJ, what this man has done is "abuse of authority" and "perjury of oath" both high crimes, and Congress should be charged as well for NDAA.

THe founding fathers did not steal from the rich and give to the poor. You have an extremely warped view if that is what you think they stood for. In fact, most didn't agree with any one being able to vote that didn't own land. Because those that didn't didn't have skin in the game. They assumed that when masses can vote themselves raises through welfare, the Republic would fail, and they were right.

And by the way, I am 48, graduated with a 4.0, have an IQ of 160, Started my own business and have made a couple million in my life. I am English, Irish, German, Jew, French, American Indian, Dutch, and Scotch, so I hardly have call to be a bigot.

Geeeeez ..... In response to your comments about me yesterday ..... I am not a Lib ... I am not a tea-bagger. I do have a choice and that is to listen to people and make an independent decision. And if I sat down and talked to you I would not be holding a gun - don't own one. But it is ok if others do because they are free to make that choice. You on the other hand have made a choice to force your disgusting drivel onto other people.

You being as closed minded as you are suggests that you really are a bonehead. You spout and fuss and fume but you have said not one constructive thing to help anyone understand your crap. Your attitude about life and people suck. Your self-centered beliefs suggest that you think that you are the only person in the world who has something to say and all of us had better listen. I try to listen to people who have something to say that make sense. You have made no sense in all of your rants. Proving once again that you are a bonehead. Not having ever met you ... I would guess that you are an overly educated professional student who lives above your mother's garage and you eat cheetos and watch porn when you aren't sleeping your life away. Do something positive with your life. Go for a walk. Smell the roses. Get out of the garage. Meet some other people and listen to them. You might learn something that isn't in a text book.

stull Comment collapsed by the community

This comment got collapsed............my point exactly! Freedom of speech only applies when the liberal democrats and the liberal democrat media agrees with what you are saying otherwise you are not to be heard. Very closed minded people and you are the one crying freedom of speech and everyone should have a piece of the pie (corporate greed....bad big oil and so on.) I guess it's only for the people who agree with you.

You know I am not a rich person, I work full time five days a week, I own my home, my vehicle and I am a single income person with a son. I make $11.47 and hour and I PAY TAXES and I don't think like you. We are all different and we all have our thoughts and I am very thankful that I can take care of myself and my son with no government aid or help from my sons father. I do it myself and most of all I am very very thankful I am not a closed minded person as most of you here are on Newsvine. I don't hit the button that will collapse a comment just because I don't agree with your point of view. I have an open mind and as I stand in the middle I actually do learn from both sides. Neither side is all right or all wrong, they both have good and bad points. More people need to think like this instead of standing directly behind the "D" or the "R"

            dudogger

Yep, Coral Taxi is surely a hapless TeaBagger.

To the newsvine police this is okay but demoncrat or a post that breaks no rules but does not agree with the liberal thinkers gets collapsed.

I hate the word teabagger. A teabagger is someone who flops his balls in someones face therefore "getting teabagged." This is okay to Newsvine. I wonder if the word butt phucker is okay? To me a butt phucker is someone that is an a$$hole, not someone who likes to give it in the a$$. Can I use the word butt pucker on here Newsvine or is that not okay just like the word teabagger shouldn't be okay.

            Have a great day!

We should get out of Afghanistan fast; but the stupidity of burning copies of the Quran and the aftermath will not go away for a long time. There was no justification, just an act of frustration which again proves that we should not be there without a firm resolution in our committment to end the violence immediately.

According to the article, they don't know who shot the officers.

Has anyone considered the possibility that it was a disgruntled US solider who shot them? Perhaps they (dead officers) shorted him on his pay or he got tired of eating "sea rations" (military food which taste bad if eaten all the time * see movie Platoon)

By the way we wouldn't be in Afghanistan at this point if we had remained focused on getting bin Laden - Bush purposefully let him get away so he could continue to frighten the world and sell his ridiculous story about Iraq (nobody un-elects a President while we're at war, remember?) That crapola about bin Laden and Sadam being in cahoots - Saddam was secular, an infidel according to bin Laden's standards. They would be in the same room together unless bin Laden could have taken Saddam out!

The Taliban (whom Obama seems to want to 'talk' to) and the Afghan government don't want the US in the region, any excuse will serve to stir rioting. Karzai is a snake and the sooner we leave the area the better. Let the Afghans return to the fourth century, their mindsets are incapable of progressing beyond that era and the entire area is a lose/lose and has been since forever. Afghanistan is not worth the cost in US lives.

Boots on the ground over there is a mistake, not because the troops are inept, rather, the leadership is inept and that is from the top down. You don't make nice to people who want to kill you, you don't engage in diplomatic diatribe with people who want to kill you and you don't attempt to create a 21st century democracy in a country that has no desire to even begin to encompass the concept of life beyond living in hovels.

I have to agree. I don't mind apologizing for burning the Quran. (Bush did it too.) What I do mind is religion kooks dictating what is right and wrong and then killing our troops. So let them have their little cave or mud hut and bring our troops home. Al Queida was and is the enemy. The Taliban are just religious kooks who can't get laid and need something to complain about. (Sounds familiar to Republicans doesn't it?) Let them have their country, we sure as hell don't need it unless our politicians have their hands in the opium trade and that would be an even bigger story.

See we can learn something from the Koreans, you kill one of them they kill ten of yours, I had a Marine friend that was in the Viet Nam war that told me that, that when the Viet Cong's would shell the camps they would not shell where the Koreans were, that is how you get respect, and that's all these people understand ... I don't know why we are not killing these people, I see what they have done as an Act of War and if that's what they want lets give them what they want ... An all out war. The reason they do what they do is because they know we won't do a thing to them and we need to set these people straight, that if you kill one of ours we will kill a lot of you!

At least 25 people have been killed and hundreds wounded since Tuesday, when it first emerged that Qurans and other religious materials had been thrown into a fire pit used to burn garbage at Bagram Air Field, a large U.S. base north of Kabul.

If this is what their "holy book" teaches them to do then it is GARBAGE and should be burned.

Said where? Did muslims burn these books on a NATO Base because they had been written into?

I do not care what you say about freedom of expression, burning something that means so much and is so insulting is an expression of hatred (hate crime) and taints all American citizens as a party to the act. Most Americans can disagree with someone w/o resorting to burning things their opponent holds in great respect.

By the way, it was the Taliban in Afghanistan who were in charge and protecting Osama Bin Laden when this started....never even heard of Al Quada till Bush started connecting Iraq to the garbage for his own personnal reasons.

These internal "un-civil" wars have been waging in these middle east countries for thousands of years and we should leave them to continue to battle amongst themselves. We have sent America into massive debt because of these unnecessary wars and we need not wait, or should I say cannot wait until 2014 to end this. Get our men and women out of Afghanistan now. It is clear that there is no place safe for any Americans in that country. Whether it is the Taliban using stolen uniforms or Afghans themselves turning on American soldiers, either way we have to leave now before more are killed. The Taliban were just waiting for an excuse to rile up the people and they found it through this ridiculously stupid mistake of burning Qurans. I just don't understand why the commanding officer who found out about it went public with it. Didn't he realize what the ramifications would be?

And, to the people attacking the president for apologizing...that is completely ridiculous and short-sighted. Of course, they have to realize that all former presidents, including Republicans, have had to apologize to foreign countries for mistakes to attempt to quiet things down. In this case, it is clear that the Taliban are not going to let things calm down and this is definitely the worst case scenario and our people are in grave danger.

Kay - the books were given to prisoners and when they were released or transferred the ended up in the trash and were thrown in the incinerator. It was not deliberate. The point I am trying to make is, their religion prohibits them from making images of Mohamed because it is considered "Idolatry" but then they turn around and make the Koran an idol that can't be talked about in a negative way or disrespected at all - even by mistake. When it is, they kill themselves and anyone else they can find. If this is what their so-called "holy book" is all about then it is not holy and should be eradicated.

As I recall, hundreds of Bibles were burned by the military for the simple reason that they were written in the local language, so what right do those nuts have for killing Americans because Qurans that were defaced by Afghan terrorists were burned?

We need to re-examine our goals there - perhaps we should just pull out and let the massacre of Afghan civilians by the Taliban run its course, and then tell the Afghans that we're still at war with the Taliban and let the Afghans form a government. If we don't like the 'leadership' they form, send in some drones and tell them to 'try again'. Sooner or later, we'll get a government we can tolerate.

The mistake we make in Afghanistan is in thinking they are like the rest of the World, which has a central government that exercises some control in the country. That is not the case in Afghanistan, where their loyalty is to the various tribes, not to the government. It's not a country in the normal sense of the word.

We need to just get out of there, and bring our boys and girls home, and let them kill eachother off the way they were doing. Wash our hands of the whole dirty mess. Their whole religion is a false theology anyway. They are just looking for excuses to kill our people, and this proves it. As far as I am concerned they are not even people.

My brother told me that the same thing happened in the Korean War with the Turks. If one Turk was killed, ten Koreans were killed, and the North Koreans avoided them as a result.

Unfortunately, that tactic was also used by the Nazis in WW2, and it wasn't looked upon very favorably by the Allies - and then there are those darned Geneva Conventions.

It's time to get our troops off the ground, send in our war planes and rain down a horror the likes of which those sub-human monsters could not begin to imagine. They kill our people over a few burned books? We should burn them all. There is, and never will be any reasoning with those people. And if you think I sound like a hateful bigot, what do you think those people would say about you? If you are an American, they would execute you and your family without hesitation. It's time to shut off the news cameras and let our troops do what needs to be done. Make no mistake, the longer we show these monsters tolerance, the more lives will be lost.

Clearly you don't have any clue of what you're talking about. First off, if Bush were in office he would use this as an excuse to attack another country that has nothing to do with anything to get more americans killed. He sure did like sending American troops to their deaths. second, i fought in his war for profit in Iraq, there was no kicking ass. We were bound with an ROE so strict, you couldn't look at the iraqi's without threat of court martial. At one point they actually wanted us to load dummy rounds and try to incapacitate the enemy who is firing real rounds at us. Thats after we politely asked them to stop firing at us. yeah, your massiah bush there. @!$%#ing scum bag.

Words cannot describe how stupid you sound. You go even beyond the typical republican. Most republicans I know don't even want to acknowledge the bush mistake. Here you go on praising him for the murder of thousands of US troops all so him and mr. haliburton can get rich.

We don't have any respect for Afghans or their religion. Just read some of the posts on this board. The U.S. invasion of Afghanistan was an imperial venture in order to dominate a region rich in minerals (i.e. oil) and it's also just an opportunity to kick someone else who's weaker in the face.

9/11 was just an excuse. Most of the people who did it were Saudi, "our arabs". The core of Al queda and the Taliban were originally funded and taught to be terrorists by the U.S. in Afghanistan in the 1980's (remember Reagan's salute to the "Freedom Fighters" in Afghanistan?) when they were then fighting the Russians.

Here's some more about Imperial interventions by Ret. General Smedley Butler:

Major General Smedley Butler (USMC) fought in WWI, Haiti, Nicaruaga, Mexico and Cuba in the early part of the 1900's. He recieved the Congressional Medal of Honour twice as well as many other decorations. Here is a speech he gave to the American Legion convention in 1933:

              Smedley Butler on Interventionism

War is just a racket. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of people. Only a small inside group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few at the expense of the masses. I believe in adequate defense at the coastline and nothing else. If a nation comes over here to fight, then we'll fight. The trouble with America is that when the dollar only earns 6 percent over here, then it gets restless and goes overseas to get 100 percent. Then the flag follows the dollar and the soldiers follow the flag. I wouldn't go to war again as I have done to protect some lousy investment of the bankers. There are only two things we should fight for. One is the defense of our homes and the other is the Bill of Rights. War for any other reason is simply a racket. There isn't a trick in the racketeering bag that the military gang is blind to. It has its "finger men" to point out enemies, its "muscle men" to destroy enemies, its "brain men" to plan war preparations, and a "Big Boss" Super-Nationalistic-Capitalism. It may seem odd for me, a military man to adopt such a comparison. Truthfulness compels me to. I spent thirty- three years and four months in active military service as a member of this country's most agile military force, the Marine Corps. I served in all commissioned ranks from Second Lieutenant to Major-General. And during that period, I spent most of my time being a high class muscle- man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the Bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I suspected I was just part of a racket at the time. Now I am sure of it. Like all the members of the military profession, I never had a thought of my own until I left the service. My mental faculties remained in suspended animation while I obeyed the orders of higher-ups. This is typical with everyone in the military service. I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefits of Wall Street. The record of racketeering is long. I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912 (where have I heard that name before?). I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. In China I helped to see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested. During those years, I had, as the boys in the back room would say, a swell racket. Looking back on it, I feel that I could have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.

Why is Bush still getting blamed for this? Obama is our President right now today and nothing seems to be his responsibility unless it is something you guys think is good, anything bad is somebody else's fault. Things that happened during Bush's Presidency in your eyes is Bush's fault not Clintons but all the bad $hit that happened during Clintons Presidency is Bush SR fault. Marine Mom:

I can only imagine the thoughts that run through your mind, every day your son is in Afghanistan. Thank you for his service and sacrifice.

Our neighbor was recently deployed for the second time to go to Kabul, Afghanistan front lines of combat.. We watch each day as the family's lives change. No more routine, no regular work schedule, no more play with his children at such a young age--the children do not understand why there Daddy is at War---they most likely feel abandoned.

Do you also get to speak to your son, through the Internet. They get a chance to speak, and talk to him once a week. That is a better communication than from Wars before.

His wife is devastated; always anxious, and worried about his safety. The family, neighbors, friends have pulled together to help her out, keeping them busy, and showing our respects by flying an American Flag in the front of our house.

May your son keep the Peace there, peace within himself. It takes a certain individual who can muster up the courage to go to this Uncivilized Territory. Of course, it was not their choice. May he come home very soon.

              Best Regards.

man for Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, suggests Seymour Hersh in his
recent New Yorker article entitled 'Selective Intelligence,' was Abram Shulsky,
director of the Office of Special Plans (OSP) – an agency created specifically
to find the evidence of WMDs and/or links with Al Qaeda, piece it together, and
clinch the case for the invasion of Iraq.

              Like Wolfowitz, Shulsky is a
student of an obscure German Jewish political philosopher named Leo Strauss who
arrived in the United States in 1938. Strauss taught at several major
universities, including Wolfowitz and Shulsky's alma mater, the University of
Chicago, before his death in 1973.

Strauss is a popular figure among the
neoconservatives. Adherents of his ideas include prominent figures both within
and outside the administration. They include 'Weekly Standard' editor William
Kristol; his father and indeed the godfather of the neoconservative movement,
Irving Kristol; the new Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence, Stephen
Cambone, a number of senior fellows at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI)
(home to former Defense Policy Board chairman Richard Perle and Lynne Cheney),
and Gary Schmitt, the director of the influential Project for the New American
Century (PNAC), which is chaired by Kristol the Younger.

              Strauss'
philosophy is hardly incidental to the strategy and mindset adopted by these men
              – as is obvious in Shulsky's 1999 essay titled "Leo Strauss and the World of
Intelligence (By Which We Do Not Mean Nous)" (in Greek philosophy the term
nous denotes the highest form of rationality). As Hersh notes in his
article, Shulsky and his co-author Schmitt "criticize America's intelligence
community for its failure to appreciate the duplicitous nature of the regimes it
deals with, its susceptibility to social-science notions of proof, and its
inability to cope with deliberate concealment." They argued that Strauss's idea
of hidden meaning, "alerts one to the possibility that political life may be
closely linked to deception. Indeed, it suggests that deception is the norm in
political life, and the hope, to say nothing of the expectation, of establishing
a politics that can dispense with it is the exception."

              Rule One:
              Deception

It's hardly surprising then why Strauss is so popular in an
administration obsessed with secrecy, especially when it comes to matters of
foreign policy. Not only did Strauss have few qualms about using deception in
politics, he saw it as a necessity. While professing deep respect for American
democracy, Strauss believed that societies should be hierarchical – divided
between an elite who should lead, and the masses who should follow. But unlike
fellow elitists like Plato, he was less concerned with the moral character of
these leaders. According to Shadia Drury, who teaches politics at the University
of Calgary, Strauss believed that "those who are fit to rule are those who
realize there is no morality and that there is only one natural right – the
right of the superior to rule over the inferior."

              This dichotomy requires
"perpetual deception" between the rulers and the ruled, according to Drury.
Robert Locke, another Strauss analyst says,"The people are told what they need
to know and no more." While the elite few are capable of absorbing the absence
of any moral truth, Strauss thought, the masses could not cope. If exposed to
the absence of absolute truth, they would quickly fall into nihilism or anarchy,
according to Drury, author of 'Leo Strauss and the American Right' (St. Martin's
              1999).

              Second Principle: Power of Religion

              According to
Drury, Strauss had a "huge contempt" for secular democracy. Nazism, he believed,
was a nihilistic reaction to the irreligious and liberal nature of the Weimar
Republic. Among other neoconservatives, Irving Kristol has long argued for a
much greater role for religion in the public sphere, even suggesting that the
Founding Fathers of the American Republic made a major mistake by insisting on
the separation of church and state. And why? Because Strauss viewed religion as
absolutely essential in order to impose moral law on the masses who otherwise
              would be out of control.

At the same time, he stressed that religion was
for the masses alone; the rulers need not be bound by it. Indeed, it would be
absurd if they were, since the truths proclaimed by religion were "a pious
fraud." As Ronald Bailey, science correspondent for Reason magazine points out,
"Neoconservatives are pro-religion even though they themselves may not be
              believers."

"Secular society in their view is the worst possible thing,''
Drury says, because it leads to individualism, liberalism, and relativism,
precisely those traits that may promote dissent that in turn could dangerously
weaken society's ability to cope with external threats. Bailey argues that it is
this firm belief in the political utility of religion as an "opiate of the
masses" that helps explain why secular Jews like Kristol in 'Commentary'
magazine and other neoconservative journals have allied themselves with the
Christian Right and even taken on Darwin's theory of evolution.

              Third
              Principle: Aggressive Nationalism

              Like Thomas Hobbes, Strauss
believed that the inherently aggressive nature of human beings could only be
restrained by a powerful nationalistic state. "Because mankind is intrinsically
wicked, he has to be governed," he once wrote. "Such governance can only be
established, however, when men are united – and they can only be united against
              other people."

Not surprisingly, Strauss' attitude toward foreign policy
was distinctly Machiavellian. "Strauss thinks that a political order can be
stable only if it is united by an external threat," Drury wrote in her book.
              "Following Machiavel

In order for these two officers to be killed where they were killed they had to be betrayed by "ALLIES"

Hmmm, I noticed that all of the protesters around the air base, around the US embassy, around Afghan govt offices are all angry young males shouting "death to America". No women, no children no innocents or peaceful sit-ins. It would seem its time for the US military to stage a little demonstration of our own. Show up at one of the hostile riots and you are immediately identified as a hostile combatant and slaughtered. Helicopter gunships, fuel-air bombs, simple wholesale slaughter.

We've told them we're leaving we've told them when we're leaving. (A mistake in my mind) but they continue to poke at the bear with a stick. They are to stupid to let live. Darwin needs a hand here and we should give him a hand. Evolution needs to take a leap!

Having recently seen the Movie "Safe House", I still have memories of Bill Clinton sending "humanitarian aid" to Haiti while the CIA was arming the neighboring Country to go in and blow Haiti up>... Once the Dominican Republic had "its thing going" there was another "cluster" that happened that cause the USA some embarrassment.

Afghanistan is amongst the "few countries" in this area that speak Farsi (the National Language of former Persia, which included Iran). There is a "border dispute" that offers both Pakistan and Afghanistan to flex their muscles back and forth. In the middle of all of this there are Clerics that are "rogue" people with a flock that follows them, no different than any of our own "religious leaders" that have some of them going so far as to "arm a militia" that is ready to resist the US-Gov, should the Preachers disagree with something.

I've never quite understood the WHY behind a religion that "requires submission" to an ideology not to improve the Life of people but to control the people through Fear of many things... it doesn't make a difference whether the Fear is of Hell, damnation, demons or other "crazed and mentally unstable thoughts" OR the Fear is of "suicide bombers killing women and children" (this was part of the "shock and awe" that Osama (and many of his followers) were(are) participating in).

The simple fact that these people can Label a "whole nation" of people is a clear sign that they've not understood the nature of this Beast.

Aside from all this crap and garbage that people are doing to each other, whatever happened to Community and working together to solve problems, help each other survive? What about the Joy, Love and Grace that Spirit and God can bring to a person... where are these things? Are we going to sit here in this world and die without ever having known the Beauty of God's work, the Joy of God's Heart, the Blessings of being at Peace... ?

I use the word Proud, not as a word which demeans another, but expresses the Faith, Love and Hope that my Cherokee (Penobscot and other) had in relationship to the World in which they lived.

Yes there were(are) things to fear, yes there are times of trouble and hunger, but as a Community there is also a means to further what could be called real evolution where we become "smarter" than people who are running around calling the rest of the world, heathens and demon possessed. What do they think they are ... special? Does it make sense (aside from someones Mind) that a God of everything and everyone is going to say to ANY part of his/her creation... uh -- you're just a little out of sorts for me... time to die...

It's not the way it works. What are we trying to prove by thinking we're Special? I believe these people are so enthralled with their Power, that they have simply forgotten that God might like a little appreciation once in awhile. There are old rights and rituals that Modern culture doesn't even apply anymore, that cause problems for many people along the way. It's recorded in the Bible, the Quran and even some of the Vedic and Tibetan texts where there is this "judgement" because people decided to BE the almighty, the all powered one(s).... in the end the subversion of God was not taken lightly but even with warnings given multiple times to people everywhere, there were still those that were "stuck" in this ego-tripping Power Mind and couldn't "give it up"... even our own 9/11 is written in the Bible that we would be given a warning when we turned our backs on this God (or our Supreme Being) that knows us Spiritually before we come here Physically.

It only takes a prayer or a thank you or a reminder that what allowed us to come here is definitely on the up and up. We should Honor this Being, the Heart of what we've been offered as a Life Force in a Body is an amazing Gift.

I would encourage everyone of us, including the Taliban and anyone who hates people that are Americans that WHAT we are is not just a God fearing Nation, but a God loving Nation that desires to express this love in our respect and Honor of many things. I saw this in Spain when I was there of how beautiful the Moorish People wrote poetry, created works of art, etc. to glorify, to show love of and to share in the beauty of what they saw as a Spiritual expression of God in the Human Being.

I hear the "concern" but lets consider HOW we solve it, not just "there in Afghanistan" but also amongst our own here in the USA.

                Heart of All that IS,

Why enter in a hurry and run away in a hurry?

Let us look at some of the regular songs being played on Syria and Iran.

                1. We have drones, bunker buster and blah and blah and to blow them!

                2. We have to help the rebels, remove WMD (forget about Paki nukes) and make sure that there are no human rights violations and innocent children and women are being killed. Saudis, oil companies and lobbyists and their puppets dancer like some politicians in the US, Britain and European nations, UN, Red Cross and others have certified about them as in Iraq.

                3. We should not tolerate despotic rulers like Assads or mad rulers of Iran. Saudis have told about them. You see Saudi ruler with 5000 prince and princesses are the model for rulers. How can Assad and Iranian rulers be like them?

                4. Take debts from from China and ask China to behave!

Another song being played in the same Afghanistan and Syria: we are badly beaten, we are starving and where is the world?

If one hears the above once and gets fooled it is acceptable.

If one gets fooled over and over then, there must be something like monies speaking or some are totally dumb!

Purnell, I hate to say it, but you are very short sighted, or narrow minded yourself. With relatives and friends all over the world, and having been raised in foreign countries, I can say with certainty, President Obama, as a leader, is not respected at all by the majority of the civilized world. (But then again, neither was President Bush, II.)

As far as some of the other comments, as a retired army officer, I agree. It is time to send all the politicians, on both sides of congress aisle, overseas, hand them uniforms and weapons, bring back ALL of our fighting men and women, and then see what happens.

I seem to remember about a month ago, when soldiers were leaving a base in Iraq and burning materials, etc - they left the job to some military person who didn't really feel like doing it - and "sensitive" documents and plans were left for "the enemy." These prisoners should have been able to keep their Qur'an - in reality most of Afghanistan in illiterate, they may not have been able to read the book, but it gave them solace while imprisoned. As for the violence - it has been stated over and over by the Afghan government that they want the US out now - why aren't we leaving? I guess we want the bases open so we can help defend Israel when they start an idiotic war with Iran - over nothing.

We have been asked to leave - if we decide to stay in hostile territory that is the fault of the US leaders. We have, through our misunderstanding of the Afghani, Pakistani and Iraqi people - made them hate us. If you thought there were people against the US in 2000 - times that by thousands more today. The policies of President Bush and Obama have us gotten us nothing but deeper in debt, we have lost thousands of troops, we have thousands more that are seriously injured, we have killed hundreds of thousands of civilians -

Every time a US flag is burned in the Middle East the great people of the US have a fit - one flag, let's nuke them to oblivion (just like what most of the posts here read) - we burn hundreds of their holy book - in their world, they wouldn't have cared if we burned flags we had passed out - we burned what they have their faith rooted in - it is not a book of violence but it is to be treated with respect - after the fact apologies are useless - just as they are here. I'm so tired of reading posts condemning people, disrespecting people, etc just because you don't understand the country, religion, etc. Who looks like the terrorist now? We do.

                  Collapse away!

Where is the Muslim outrage when women and kids are used as suicide bombers? Where is the Muslim outrage when women and kids are used as human shields? Why are nearly all of Muslim countries dictatorships or monarchies? Their culture lives in the past.

"Believers take neither Jews nor Christians for your friends". (Surah 5:51)

We need to market a Koran toilet paper, with the whole text embossed on the sheets - perhaps it can be done on three full rolls. Then every American can show the Islamic world what we really think of their seventh-century cult of violence and hatred - writings fit only for ar*eholes.

Bin Laden is dead, alquieda has moved to Yemen...

No, actually according to the new Iraqi government, things have been quieter in Iraq up until the last week of coordinated bombings because so many of theforeign insurgents and Alqeda have rushed to Syria to help their Muslim brothers there topple Assad. Interestingly enough our Seceratry of State and President are trying to figure out ways to help arm the same people that have been killing US soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. So lets see, with Obamas blessings and even support: Egypt now controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood, Lebanon control by the freedom fighters made up of among others the Muslim brotherhood and former Alqeda, Iran is less than a year away from having the bomb. The whole middle east is more unstable then ever before. A Powderkeg waiting for a single spark. Isreal can't afford to let Iran go Nuclear and Obama is appologizing to a culture that sees that as a pityful weakness.

Yes I guess team Obama has it all under control. Pathetic! It would be laughable if it wasn't hurltling us towards WWIII

Wasn't it the Republican party that blasted Obama for withdrawing troops from Iraq in the first place.

Ron Paul is the ONLY candidate that would get us out of Iraq and Afghanistan. Deal with it.

rplat, I am a lifelong liberal Democrat and a staunch Obama supporter...but his apology really was outrageous. Even worse, it was a sign of weakness. The only thing we can say in his defense is that he apparently did not know at the time that our two soldiers had been killed. But now that he does know that the terrorists murdered them and then killed at least two more Americans today, so at least he should announce some kind of tribute to them.

hole. Maybe Mr. Obama should apologize again, because his first apology hasn't worked! These fanatics are nut cases that can't be dealt with on a common sense basis. The Democrats were voted in in 2006 to get us out of Iraq and Afghanistan, we are still there, (gone from Iraq 12/11). Get the hell out and let them kill each other. I hope Mr. Obama can manage an apology to the 4 military members who have been killed so far, but I doubt it, he seems to like to bow to everyone out of this country. Hopefully, he will bow to us when he leaves office in 2013!

Hmmm... I agree. President Obama needs to take very punitive, decisive action now, not next week.

If it were up to me, I would arrange a mass Muslim holy book burning. Spray them with pig's blood, and then set fire to thousands of those books.

Then, I would order immediate withdrawal of all U.S. troops - with the instructions that they set fire to and burn, or blow up, everything they have to leave behind.

If demonstrators gather to protest the burning of the Muslim holy books, they should be told to disperse or risk being shot. If they did not leave, open fire on them and kill as many of them as possible.

We are dealing with a feudal society, on an unequal playing field. The United States cannot drag a feudal society of 300 to 500 years ago into the present. The Soviet Union learned that, at great cost of troops and dollars.

We need to leave now, leave nothing behind, except the dead bodies of Muslim extremists.

When we do leave it'll be like Vietnam for those that remember. Our troops could make the war end in a matter of hours if given the chance. What separates us from them is that we are not Barbarians. I used to hear if we were'nt over there they'ed be over here. Guess what? They are here and they are using our own laws and rules against us with no end in sight. I think organized religion is destroying the planet.

You may not like muslims (and based on your comments, they probably wouldn't like you), but the thing that makes this country 'supposedly' civilized, is TOLERANCE for others.

But islam is anything but tolerant, and an extremely violent ideology. Their neanderthal-flavored koran is nothing but hatred and vitriol against infidels and even muslims who stray from the narrow path they are ordered to follow. No friends with infidels, unless to the advantage of islam, and support for, or participation in, jihad, are mandatory. Sure, infidels can exist in muslim societies, but only if they pay a special tax, and suffer untold discrimination, like never insulting a muslim, and recognizing their inferior status to muslims. God help them if they are caught with a bible or other religious books in the islamic world, or insult islam or a muslim. Apostosy is a death sentence, which the muslims apply with vigor and relish. What a sick and deadly ideology these fools follow.

Vet - Maybe you need to tell the US Council of Bishops that message about religion and politics not mixing. Because they sure don't look at that way. Christianity is no better than Islam. Christianity has done plenty of killing also. All religions breed extremists. Should I judge all Christians by the actions of the idiot church from Kansas or the jerk that thinks killing doctors who perform abortions is a christian act? We have all of the current presidential contenders stumbling all over each other to proclaim they are the real Christian and the others aren't.

Yes, we need to change OUR freedom of religion in the Constitution to be explicit about freedom FROM religion.

jgalt6 - I know many muslims who follow the islamic faith and they are indeed tolerant and non violent individuals. It's very obtuse to say an entire population fits the mold you are trying to describe. There are a few that take things to an 'extreme', but the very same thing can be said about people who follow other religious ideologies as well. We have seen to many examples in the United States where this has happened and is happening now.

Veteran-4093979 - I have not visited ground zero.. but I have visited Arlington National Cemetery. I have personally seen the graves of individuals in my own family (at other locations) that served this nation faithfully, but each one of them would never have condoned murdering someone simply because they didn't like that they were muslim. So much hatred in our world because people think their religious beliefs are stronger than someone elses. It's been this way for thousands of years and it doesn't appear as it will change anytime soon.

Honestly, there is no easy solution to what is happening. I think our military should (as soon as possible) leave Afghanistan, and let their own people decide there futures. As for the muslim faith, we have remember that the actions of a few, never dictate the entire population in most cases.

Thank you for your post and for your military service to this nation.

Itsabouttime-The Bible does not preach hate and fear. I'd like to know where you get that from. The Old Testament is a telling of history. It doesn't say for the Jews to go pick a fight with the Phillistines, but it says that they fought. It doesn't say that Egyptians should continue throughout all eternity to enslave the Jews, but they did enslave them back then. The New Testament is the part that Christians are to live by. Jesus said in John 13:34-35 "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." The New Testament is what we are to live by, which does not preach fear and hate.To make any comparison to the Quaran is really not fair. And this isn't directed to Itsabouttime but its sad that in this country that is supposed to be so "tolerant" of everybody that we really aren't. I mean, you can try to belittle any Christian, such as Tim Tebow(since he seems to be catching flack for everything he does) but you say anything negative about any other religion, race or ethnicity it's considered bigotry. Don't anyone go off on a tangent, but he is a white Christian. If a Muslim player knelt on the sideline or prayed in the endzone after scoring, no one would ever make mention of it because it would be "politically incorrect", but hey, let's knock Tebow every chance we get. I don't support the burning of the Quaran, but if someone burned a Bible, I'd express my disapproval, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be killing anybody over it.

Okay, maybe its the interpretation of the bible that preaches hate and fear. How many stories do we have to hear from Christians that preach "if you are gay, you will burn in hell". Is that not hate? Is not that fear? How many other times do we have to hear people USE the bible to justify their means? How about the hate mongering that comes from the "Westboro Baptist Church"

Please also enjoy this letter to Dr Laura. I think that explains the rest of the "old testament" and how it also supports hate and fear. (see below). Now, if people of Christian faith followed gods real rules... Tolerance, Acceptance, and DO unto others and you'd have do UNTO you.. then perhaps the bible would be a more tolerable book.

When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15:19- 24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I personally have no issue with someone and their religious beliefs or choices. However, to say that Islam is more hateful than Christianity is absurd. They each have their own set of hatred and fear.

allylloyd - Please educate me... Which sections of the bible am I supposed to follow? Or do I just pick and choose which ones apply to me? I am a little lost here, please tell me so that I can make the right choices. Laughing to myself. Once again, it just behooves me why some people pick and choose what parts of the bible are right, and which ones are wrong. Not you personally :)

The christian faith has FOR CENTURIES preached hatred towards other religions that do not meet the mold of the faith. I personally could care less about anyone's religious beliefs, that's their choice, but to say the Christians do not also preach hate (some) is a lie.

If you would have read what I said, the Old Testament is historical. You referenced Old Testament with your alter of sacrifice, shellfish, etc. As far as that particular church you referenced, I don't condone their beliefs, but I do you realize that it comes across that you defend your Muslim friends that you know as good people but you lump all Christians together as what I'm guessing you sort of consider to be hypocritical. If I got that wrong I apologize. Being a Christian is a progressive journey. In reference to what you said about picking what scriptures to follow, yeah it happens. Once you realize you've not followed a particular scripture that you should have, you repent(which is easy, you don't have to do any blood letting) and you go on and try not to do it again. We aren't expected to be perfect, but to try. As far as homosexuality, I personally feel it is a sin, but it's not my place to judge or condemn someone. I have my own sins to contend with every day. I'm not saying that this is your way of thinking but a lot of people seem to think you have to be near perfect in order to be a Christian. The last time I tried walking on water I went in about waist deep. I'd really like to keep discussing this with you but I gotta go to dinner, but we are supposed to follow the New Testament. And about the last 400 years, the Crusades and what not, those are all things that aren't what Christianity are about now. There are always going to be zealots and fanatics, but you can't lump us all together. God bless.

OK..Bush started it. It is his fault. It is his war. He is the worst president ever. Now do you feel better? I hope so. Personally I don't really care who started it. I just want someone to end it. I would like to see it ended very soon, preferably long before the end of 2014. Bush has been gone for over 3 years and our people are still dying over there. Blaming Bush is not stopping the killing. President Obama said he was getting us out of the "Bush wars". The soldiers from Iraq came home on Bush's schedule. Why do we have to wait till 2014 for this to end? Who is benefiting from the war now?

Wrong,, Iraqis voted on a deadline for our troops to leave. It wasnt Bushs schedule, actrually he had predicted we would withdraw 2 years later than what the Iraqis told us to do. In case people Forget facts,, McCain and a lot of other GOP members in congress have been yelling for Obama to stay,Damed if he does and damed if he dont.

donn-728253 - Thank you. Yes, he is the worst president. People sit and whine about Obama, when the fail to realize what got us in there in the first place. They also forget that foreign relations do NOT END with the changing of the guard at the white house.

Why would I be happy about a war that killed thousands of innocent people over a lie? I do not jump up and down when someone dies like that, its a life lost because of STUPIDITY. Obama has done his duty to end these wars and bring our troops home. He ended Iraq on schedule, he caught Bin Laden, and he will ensure the same thing happens here.

Bush set up the time table to leave Iraq before he left the WH. As a true American he did this so the incoming President would not have to. We were to leave a fair amount of troops to maintain the gains and work with the Iraqi Security forces as trainers and advisers. Obama could not get the deal done and was thrown out of Iraq. Obama spun it and acted as if it was his doings and the liberal loons bought into his BS as usual.

And the same goes for Obama. Open your eyes!

I taught my son to look at both sides of the coin before forming an opinion. Both sides have good and both sides have bad. My son is a very smart person, he listens to the democrats points and he listens to the republican points and then he forms his own opinion. My son like me is an independent thinker and voter. If more people thought that way our country might be in better shape. Voting for someone just because they have a "D" or an "R" behind their name is not good for our country. Voting for the person that you think will do right by us is the right way to vote. There are good republican and good democratic leaders just as there are bad. Nothing will change until we the people get smart and stop this "my side is better than your side" bull$hit. It's time to grow up and be responsible and ask the same of our elected officials. They all our taking advantage of us and they are all getting rich off of us.

All that holy books from all religions should be reviewed and updated by sexologists, geographers, cosmologists and other scientists. At least science should give us an opinion about the major subjects in this books so people know what they believe in. All that books were written 2000 years ago by not very well educated people and up to their current knowledge which can not be compare to our current knowledge.

The only way Obama will get re-elected is if the non-thinking people of this country go out and vote for him again. Anyone with half a brain would not even consider him for another term.

"this is why us Crakers are hated" REALLY. They hate us because a book written thousands of years ago tells them to and they are just to stupid to realize that it no longer applies. The reason that radical Muslims cannot co-exist in a civilized society is because, frankly, they are about 1000 years behind every one else in simple social evolution. Maybe its the 100's of years of dictator ship, not allowing them to grow as human beings. Maybe its the the fact that they live their lives by and interpretation of a book written 1000's of years ago and do so blindly. These people are just different than the rest of us, and no amount of talking, training or gifts will change that. The only way to fix this problem is to remove our troops from the situation, so that we do not continue to kill men, turning them into martyrs and their sons into leaders. Isolate and leave them to starve so that the internal population sees how real societies have to be tolerant to survive, exterminate the ones that pop up as leaders of the extremist, and wait four or 5 generations for them to develop. Peace with these people will not happen in our lifetimes. Its a pipe-dream.

MMC(SS) - Funny.... Christians are doing the same with 'parts' of the Bible they think apply and trying to change secular law with Christian law. Granted, its a more 'peaceful' approach, but remarkable similarities.

I mostly agree but every "religion" has it's hate. The bible has many violent parts yet so many believe it is the "truth". You have jews and arabs fighting over a piece of land -Israel. Catholocism tells you to do whatever you want because you will always be forgiven except for suicide. There are nuts and extremists in every "religion". Look at the nuts who protests the funeral of soldiers because they believe it is a punishment because of homosexuality. Man and religion is a bad combination. When you let some other thing tell you you are not good enough unless you follow these religious rules, you stop caring about others and you certainly have no self worth. Not all Muslims want to kill and not all Christians hate. Sometimes I don't think we have come very far from living in caves and hunting for survival. I see no hope for the future of man.

Calling people a "faggot" is pretty immature. Since you support the Obamasiah, you had better check out his well-known and covered up sexual practices before and during his ascension to the throne. His "body man" Reggie Love (really) left the WH and the Obamasiah is thrashing about like crazed chimp in heat. Michelle just keeps going on vacation so she won't have to be seen with "it." As they say.....Chicago, what a hell of a town.

Man and religion is a bad combination.

I NEVER will think this. Religion as a whole, not taken to extremes, is a very good thing for man. IMHO....... the problem comes in when man tries to infuse religion into politics and law. I wish we could all leave the dogma in our houses and places of worship.

When you let some other thing tell you you are not good enough unless you follow these religious rules, you stop caring about others and you certainly have no self worth. Not all Muslims want to kill and not all Christians hate.
