What would you have our president do? Send more troops? Because we all know how well that has worked up until this point. Instead of jumping on our president for apologizing, how about you shift your anger to those responsible for the burning. Unless you are really taking it seriously that this was a simple "mistake." This mistake is costing lives while you throw the POTUS under the bus.

This whole thing is absurd and Obama was wrong to apologize and should be impeached if he allows anyone to be put on trial as Karzai has demanded for what as an honest mistake. It is also the height of hypocrisy for any of them to protest this or expect an apology when they routinely do things like burn the bodies of our soldiers and the American flag in clear attempts to inflame passions. Tell Karzai that we will apologize and consider a trial after he apologizes puts every person in his country who has burned an American flag, desecrated the corpse of an American service member, or killed an unarmed American civilian on trial.

It is completely absurd to get so upset over something like this. They put some books in the trash that were defaced with anti-American rhetoric and messages of hate and were no longer needed or wanted. In fact, it was Afghani nationals who actually put the book in the fire, not Americans. The Americans only mistakenly place them in the trash. This was not done as any kind of religious statement or to piss anyone off. since they no longer house large numbers of Muslim prisoners at the base the Korans were no longer needed. As a result they were put in the trash to be disposed of. The laborers on the base then took the trash to be burned as they always do. This was a routine disposal of trash, not some religiously motivated incident.

It is time to stop the nonsense and just pull our troops out. Let these backwards fanatics have their wars with each other and kill each other off. There is no reason to risk any more American lives trying to save them from themselves. Just make it clear that any attacks on American interests coming from the country will result in our carpet bombing the whole place. Maybe if we make it clear that they will all be out at risk if they continue to tolerate the action of the fanatics, they will do something to put an end to the fanatics themselves.

I understand the political need for an "I'm sorry" by Obama, but I also think he should forcefully state that no further action or investigation will take place on this matter till those responsible for killing people in "honor" of the book are served justice for their disgraceful actions. It's not the apology, specifically, that was wrong. It's the failure of him to account for all of his other ass kissing to the Middle East and it didn't stop anything. An apology is hardly going to be enough after the fact.

I understand after 9/11 that we saw Iraq as a threat, and we took a proactive approach by killing Saddam Hussein and his idiot children along with anyone else on that deck of cards. Because of politics, we are unable to fight a war decisively and effectively. If we commit militarily to resolve conflict then that decision needs to be made with everything on the table, no half measures, ultimately its us or the savages.

Your Gomer Pyle comment is fair enough - but destroying books is not easy. To shred them you have to destroy the spine and break it down into 'munchable' chunks and for a successful burn you have to do the same thing. Perhaps Gomer needs to practise on Newt's books or Sarah Yahbetcha's first.

As for desecration, the prisoners already did that with filthy drawings and solicitations for 'dates' in the lavatories. And, of course, the only reason why they were kept inside the air base in the first place was because the Afghan government could not be trusted. They would either torture them perhaps fatally or let them go free.

Karzai proves every day that NATO are wasting their time there and that when we leave all of the NGO's will have to leave, too. The Afghan people are not ready to join the twenty-first century, and the US should let them ripen for a few more centuries.

Why would anyone be upset at Obama making an apology? We effed up. In a pretty major way. He couldn't just ignore the situation. If he did, then everyone would be pissed at him for not doing anything.

For all of you posters chastising Obama for offering an apology and an explanation of the Koran burnings by the military - you are criticising him for supporting the troops.

If by offering an apology he is able to prevent the killing of one American who is serving the country in Afghanistan then it was a worthwhile effort. Those who's pride would prevent them from offering an apology or who fault the President for offering one of his own do not support the troops and are just children.

US Navy Vet, I live and work no more than 10 miles from Dearborn Mi. You are correct in that Arabs have changed Dearborn, however they do NOT and have not enacted Sharia law. As a matter of fact they are not all Muslim, a large amount of them are Chaldean (christians) not Muslims. The only obvious thing they have done is to broadcast the muslim call to prayer. Besides that they are contributing members of our communities, its no different than the church bells we hear on sunday. P.S. I am also a Navy vet with a lot of time in the middle east.

Those new pieces of paper are not diefied by running through a mechanical press. For this reason a Holy book lost in an accidental house fire does not require the homeowner to be killed. Reason tells us there are ways a loss can be suffered where there was no intent for harm. Reason tells us that God does not reside in the book itself. No more than God only lives in a church building, or a Synagogue building or a Mosque building. God cannot be contained that way. Reason tells us that God was not hurt when the book was burned. God does not require that people must be killed for an accident. Unless of course, the people have no reason.

WE, the United States, have made a promise to Israel (and some few others in the Middle East) to assist them in defense if it becomes necessary. I believe we should stand by that promise.

Now, on the other hand, our presence in the Middle East, in general, as the hand of war attempting to force democracy down their throats is a HUGE mistake. The radical Muslim will not change. They don't want to change. Anyone who fanatically believes (or knows) that they are the only enlightened people with a direct link to the word of God, the mind of God and the heart of God, they will first and foremost attempt to convert everyone. Refusal to be converted instills hatred and distrust because this is a basic tenent of their faith and an actual commandment from their prophet. They are taught to convert or kill.

After a few1000 year believing this stuff, it is ingrained so deeply into their psyche that I don't believe most are capable of ever thinking contrary to their upbringing! They can attempt to subvert it for a while, but it will eventually pop back up. Remember how you said when you were young you would never be anything like your parents? Then you grew up and became a parent and then one day you realize you sound just like your mother or father? That's what I mean. It is not really a conscious thing, it is ingrained into their very being.

We need to get out of the Middle East, stop trying to change them because the vast majority don't want it. If they are ever to become democratic, accepting and humane, they must develop these things by themselves and in their own time.

One more thing, Obama needs to quit apolozing for America. He is the most outspoken un-American American President EVER elected to office. If for no other reason than this, we need him out. We need someone who believes in America and Americans again if we are to survive the hard times ahead.

I am so sick and tired of these religious extremist acting like some stupid book written thousand of years ago and reprinted millions of times by man is more sacred than a human life that was created by the god they say they worship. I'm also sick and tired of our religious extremist trying to push laws that enforce their religious views. It's amazing to me that we humans are so arrogant that we actually believe that we have figured it all out. We believe we already have written everything we need to know about religion in book, yet we debate and argue over it and split into different factions of the same book. The same goes for our government. Some how we think that we have figured out all the possible ways to govern our selves and have sectioned it off into four basic classes; Democracy, Communism, Socialism or Monarchy. So many are so afraid of these titles they won't even consider that the best option may be a combination of some of them or even completely new practices.

What is in us that keeps us from wanting to grow and change with the times? How do we expect to get closer to God if we won't walk forward but instead keep looking into some book about the possible past? How can we progress as a nation if we only want to continue the same practices we started hundreds of years ago?

I believe it is time to evolve and let go of our fears of the unknown. We need to let go of our FLAWED religious books and start writing what we see and know now. We need to break our frame of government and allow the needs of our society to form and guide our actions. It's crazy to me that the same people that say "I don't wanna pay more taxes and I don't want government to control me." are the same people that say "i don't want to allow gays to marry each other or women to have access to birth control, and by the way, on your way out, drop some money in the donation plate."

Bart - Thank you for your service in Vietnam. I agree with most of what you say but one thing deserves to be clarified. In the Vietnam war 2/3rd (a majority) of all service US troops were volunteers not draftees and of those killed in action 70% were volunteers. This should not diminish their sacrifice but too many facts about the Vietnam war are just wrong and those wrong facts have been used to long to fuel political agendas.

Here are the actual numbers...

25% (648,500) of total forces in country were draftees.

Draftees accounted for 30.4% (17,725) of combat deaths in Vietnam .

Reservists killed: 5,977

National Guard: 6,140 served: 101 died.

What this tells us is that even when Vietnam was going downhill the majority of service members willing served which makes most of the arguments about the draft as it related to Vietnam rather dubious.

Bart133, As I sit here wearing my black POW/MIA cap, I too want to thank you for your service. I remember where I was when my Draft Lottery Number was announced, and I remember that sinking feeling in my got when I heard 43, and the phrase 'Saigon U, here I come". These Islamist and Taliban make the Viet Cong look like MIT Professors. I cannot agree that pulling out NOW would be a mistake. The only thing we need to make clear is that the next time our spy satellites show training camps in Afghanistan, we are not going to send troops, we are going to park a trident sub off the coast and we are going to tell the Captain to empty everything he has got on board, and when one Trident has emptied it's cache, we will send in another one. We should make it clear that by the time we are done, Afghanistan will make Chernobyl look like a spring day at Miami Beach. Most important of all we should mean it. Remove the troops and send in the drones. If they think burning this stupid book is a crime, then we need to teach them how we feel about burning the Flag of the United States of America.

Yes, thank you, Bart, for your service. My brother is also a Vietnam vet (drafted), my father-in-law was an Army vet from the Korean War, my father was a Navy vet who served aboard an aircraft carrier in the south Pacific during WW2, and one of my grandfathers was an Army vet from WW1...and I disagree with pulling out on the schedule as set down. Staying in Iraq as long as we did didn't change anything in the way the Iraqis view us, and staying longer in Afghanistan isn't going to make a difference either. Staying longer means more soldiers dying, and I don't care that they were volunteers.

I myself am a veteran of the U.S. Navy Seabees. If this country doesn't stop trying to fight conflicts by tying one hand behind the soldiers backs,they will be hard pressed to find reliable hardworking and intelligent volunteers.The politicians need to stay hid in Washington and let the real men and women do the mission without pc correctness every five minutes.General Black Jack Pershing had a way with dealing with these Muslims and it was effective.
