Chavez allies attack new opponent Capriles as Jewish, gay

Carlos Garcia Rawlins / Reuters, file

Venezuelan presidential hopeful Henrique Capriles, seen at a rally in La Guaira Jan. 27, has been attacked over his sexuality, Jewish ancestry and his selection as opposition candidate.

Allies of President Hugo Chavez are bombarding Venezuela's newly anointed opposition leader Henrique Capriles with attacks, questioning his sexuality, disparaging his Jewish roots and casting doubt on the legitimacy of the primary vote.

Auguring a rough campaign ahead of the Oct. 7 presidential election, the torrent of accusations against Capriles began just minutes after his landslide win at the Democratic Unity coalition's primary on Sunday.

With Chavez himself uncharacteristically quiet, senior officials and state media have led the attack, denouncing Capriles -- a 39-year-old state governor who wants to be Venezuela's youngest leader -- as "bourgeois" and "fascist."

"Now we know who is the candidate of imperialism, of capitalism and the right wing," said Congress leader Diosdado Cabello, a former military comrade and longtime staunch supporter of the socialist president. "The anti-patriotic candidate has a face. He won't have an easy election campaign."

Youthful progressive seeks to topple Chavez

Capriles -- the grandson of Jews who survived the World War Two Holocaust in Poland -- defines himself as a center-left "progressive" who admires Brazil's "modern left" model of free-market economics with a strong social conscience.

The attacks against him foreshadow a tough election battle in the polarized South American OPEC member nation, where Chavez has strong support among the poor and denounces opponents as representatives of a discredited, super-rich elite.

The most furious accusations have come from state media commentator Mario Silva, who often targets Chavez's foes on his late night TV show, "The Razorblade."

'The Enemy is Zionism'
Silva insulted opposition leaders and then read out a purported police document reporting Capriles was caught in a car having sex with another man in 2000.

Capriles denied the allegation and said the document was falsified. Police have not commented.

Another state radio commentator, Adal Hernandez, wrote a vitriolic profile of Capriles, highlighting his Jewish family background and titled: "The Enemy is Zionism." Capriles, a practicing Catholic, has not responded to the profile.

One cartoon, retweeted on Wednesday by a senior Chavez aide, showed Capriles in pink shorts with a Swastika on his arm, squaring up to a much larger, muscular Chavez. He often talks emotionally of his grandparents' escape from Nazi repression.

Factbox: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez

Capriles comes from a wealthy family but pointedly spends more time in a T-shirt in shantytowns than in his office, and he is seeking to project himself as above the mud-slinging.

"I wasn't elected to fight with anyone but to solve problems," said Capriles, who won nearly two-thirds of the 3 million votes cast in Sunday's primary. "The only confrontation I want is against violence, unemployment, corruption and other problems in Venezuela."

Much of the official ire against Capriles has focused on Sunday's primary, saying the overall numbers were inflated to give an impression of massive opposition turnout -- even though the state electoral authority supervised the poll.

Support from pro-U.S. interests?
Chavez supporters have also demanded to know the source of Capriles' campaign financing, implying pro-U.S interests have been backing him. The Democratic Unity candidate has responded that his books are open for all to see.

Adding to the charged atmosphere, the Supreme Court ordered the opposition on Tuesday not to burn voter registration books from Sunday's vote -- a measure they had promised to counter fears there could be retribution.

The government for years discriminated against Venezuelans whose names were on a list of people who requested a recall referendum on Chavez's rule, blocking them from jobs, state loans and in some cases even entrance to government buildings.

Referring to the Supreme Court decision, Capriles said Tuesday it appeared to be part of an attempt to "instill fear."

However opposition leaders said the court's order was issued too late, and the lists of voters' names had already been burned.

Capriles has criticized one-sided coverage by state media, accusing it of routinely ignoring protests about crime and water shortages while extensively reporting "every time a mango falls on a roof" in the state of Miranda where he is governor.

Analysts say the finally united opposition -- which in the past has been crippled by in-fighting and failed to dislodge Chavez via mass street protests or a string of votes -- has its best chance in 13 years of unseating him in October.

Yet the president still appears to have the edge, thanks to high popularity among the poor, a formidable party machine and an extraordinary pre-election spending spree on welfare projects like allowances for single mothers and pensioners.

Recent polls show Chavez would win about 60 percent of the vote in October, though analysts say that could change if Capriles runs a dynamic campaign. He plans to start a tour of Venezuela from next week.

The Eurasia Group political risk consultancy said Capriles was a competitive candidate because he was young, less connected to the country's old political class and the governor of an important state who enjoyed high approval ratings.

"We don't think this will be enough to defeat Chavez, but it points to the fact that the election could be tighter than most anticipate, and that there could be some volatility in terms of expectations in the run up to the election," it said.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

takenaka, is that you Hugo? Do you really believe your BS?, as you write freely your opinions?

Try writing something against the powers that be in Venezuela, we'll send you cards when they throw you in prison; hopefully they won't kill you.

You lefties are such liars and hypocrites.

I pray for the people of Venezuela that they can free themselves from the tyrany of Chavez. I also pray for Americans that they can free themselves from the Chavez wanna-be, Obama.

Politics is like war. A very dirty business.

Hugo is in for the fight of his life. Like any cornered animal he will pull out all the stops to survive. Liable, slander, and defamation of character included. The only thing that keeps him in power now is his army. He has powerful enemies in high places that have been after him for years. I am very glad that we do not sink to that low level of mud throwing. There is no need for it, and just goes to show what a low life he and his supporters are.

My hope is that the Venezuelan people make their voices heard at the ballot box and send Chavez a loud "your services are no longer required" message !!

Jo An, since I am a lifelong Democrat, I am very sorry to say that one of the Kennedys defended Chavez on TV: I believe it was Patrick. His commercials praised the "people of Venezuela" for donated needed heating oil to the American poor. Needless to say, the "people" were the Chavez government.

So, what's wrong with that? When someone helps you don't you thank them regardless of their political views. I don't like Chavez but I can still appreciate that his government has in fact done more to help poor people in the US than the Republican Party.

The only person who would say otherwise is the same kind of person as Chavez or Ahmadinejad.

In other words, you aren't from the right if you say that. You are from Iran.

While this Capriles will have an interesting campaign, he is NOT any kind of threat to Hugo Chavez. Dictators do not allow any real opposition to get close to overthrowing them. If the smear campaign does not work and it becomes apparent that Capriles may actually win, more likely than not he will either be assassinated or arrested on some type of trumped up charges. Since the legislature, press, and the courts are all in Chavez's pockets, any protest will be put down. Like protest in Iran, its a nice show for a short time, but the outcome has already been predetermined. Only the death of Chavez will change the politics of Venezuela.

You throw out the best point up here! I've noticed that those who throw such terms around are generally the LEAST educated about them and merely parrot what others have said. Unfortunately, such "sheeple" are one of the biggest problems in this country, because they cannot think for themselves.

If you ask them, I'm sure most cannot come up with an ORIGINAL thought as to why they don't like the person they are name calling about. They will simply repeat what they have been told or have read (or cut and pasted) off some extremist website.

What makes it worse, is that the "powers that be" recognize this and use it against us so they can stay in power!

Please READ the article before having some bizarre knee jerk reaction.

South America, Central America, Mexico and parts of the islands (Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba before Fidel, etc) have been made poor by large American Corporations - Chiquita, Coffee suppliers etc. Venezuela sits on a goldmine of oil and food, coffee production - he wants to take the country away from these foreign corporations, have the people earn a decent living and have free trade between the Latin American countries. You may like him, because FOX news doesn't like him - but he's for the people - not corporate masters using Venezuela as their own slave plantation.

Venezuela sits on a goldmine of oil and food, coffee production

Which it is literally giving away to the Chinese to pay off loans on increased military and social welfare expenditures. To add insult to injury, the price of gasoline is rising, so the Chinese are getting a bargain.

have the people earn a decent living

It's awfully difficult to make a decent living when the inflation rate is 27.6% and climbing. It's like Chavez doesn't know how to run an economy or something.

It just goes to show you:

"Wherever there is a jackboot stomping on a human face, there will be a well-heeled Western liberal to explain that the face does, after all, enjoy free health care and 100 percent literacy"

This just, yet again, proves the old adage that Power corrupts - it doesn't matter if the person is on the Right or Left, give them power, allow them to hold onto it for a while, and they become corrupted by it. Now in the US the Right starts out corrupt from the get-go, but even the left gets there easily enough.

Term limits, everywhere and for every elected office would curb this (except say in NYC where Bloomberg, a former Righty turned Lefty, turned both/neither can PAY for a third term). No office needs to be held onto more than twice, and holding an office should limit that person's ability to move onto higher offices, so that we return to the Founding Fathers' belief that political parties and career politicians are a very bad thing for the US. Once we have it here, we can then sell it to other "democracies", and people like Chavez and Putin would become archaic relics of the past. The US needs the moral high ground that an Amendment that limits people to two terms as ANY elected official would grant us, if we are to tell others how to be better Democracies. Mayer A after his/her term as Mayor may only then have one more term in any office, and then they have completed the allowed Public Office holding; thus no more career politicians, no more influence from the 1% and Corporations, Super-PAC's and the like.

As for Chavez and Capilriles, this sort of thing wouldn't occur once the US sells the world on this new idea - sure, some places will cling to dictatorships, but they will finally be seen by all for what they are, and not Democratic Nations. As to the accusations, if Chavez were a real Socialist, he'd never allow attacks based upon religion or sexuality. However he is not, he just plays one to garner the poor's votes. In all his years in office, if he were a real Socialist, one has to wonder why there are still poor in an OPEC nation. True Socialism resembles the words of Jesus - the hungry get fed, the poor get money, the ill get treated. Not the case with regards to Chavez. He can't hold power unless there are poor, much like how the GOP can't hold power without those sold on the idea that one day they will be 1%ers (as if), or the Democrats need for the Poor so they can also get votes (notice neither US Party ever does anything to change this once in power). That is why the 99% need to push this on the politicians, and after a while it will become the norm, allowing us to set the example, once again.

I do not hate or dislike Jewish people, I am not homophobic and Iran hasn't started a war since 1804 - that's a better track record then the US.

Chavez can't be a real socialist because the country is capitalistic to begin with - he has to balance that, not an easy job. I'm not saying nor did I say he was a "great" person and perhaps some power has corrupted him - perhaps not, how many times has an MSNBC article been wrong? Plenty

Armondo - did you say that Chavez was paying off loans for "social expenditures." Oh, the horror - debt free and working for the people.

I don't care if you condemn racism and homophobia, Black Kettle. I'm talking about Chavez condemning the racism and homophobia displayed by his supporters.

Oh, the horror - debt free and working for the people.

Venezuela's spending, whether on social expenditures or not, like ours, is unsustainable. He is going to drive Venezuela into bankruptcy and add additional hardship to what is already a beleaguered people.

I'm not saying nor did I say he was a "great" person

Maybe not explicitly, but you did say...

he wants to take the country away from these foreign corporations, have the people earn a decent living and have free trade between the Latin American countries...he's for the people - not corporate masters using Venezuela as their own slave plantation.

Elections will come to Venezuela and the PEOPLE of that country will decide. China and Russia are leaving Venezuela, Cuba is not getting it's promised loans and may release "sensitive" information about Chavez - Iran is the one country that is investing in Venezuela....it is a way for Iran to get around the harsh sanctions it is under.

I do not think that it is becoming for Chavez's allies to speak about the religion or orientation of his opponent - whatever they may be, Chavez should tell them to stop... I think the "ally" that is masterminding this is Iran - not the people of Venezuela.

It is the people's country and they will decide their next leader - is there a problem with that? Iran wouldn't be involved in Chavez's election if the US and EU didn't put ridiculous sanctions on the country. US and EU foreign policies are there own worst enemy in the end - they get the opposite of what they want and lose respect in the International Community.

When Chavez first became elected - he was doing his best for the people - you are correct that he has had many troubles in trying to do this - perhaps he is no longer thinking of the people, that is not right and he will be ousted from power. Chavez is not as smart as he thinks - that is one problem, I concede some of your points - that he is not doing his job well now....but he tried to in the beginning. People fail but he was elected to his position.

I don't recall anyone saying they had a problem with democratic elections in Venezuela. The best outcome would be if Capriles wins by more than the margin of fraud.

            #1.29 - Wed Feb 15, 2012 11:42 AM EST

I agree that the last election was a farce - Chavez did not win fairly and the people know that - he had to resort to using force on his own countrymen to stop the protesters. That is never a good sign - I was surprised that he retained power - so, we can agree that we hope the election is fair this time, if it's not, the people will probably run him out and for good reason.

I do believe the early Chavez - the one who pushed for the Union of South American Countries, was for the people. Now, he is for himself - I am sorry, I was not clear on the early Chavez versus him now...he did do good things and those should not be overlooked but neither should the bad things - including the last election, be overlooked.

Armando - Do you think in the beginning (early-mid 2000's) Chavez was trying his best (not always succeeding) but at least trying? I think the cancer medications have made him a different man now - he has not fulfilled many of his promises to the people of Venezuela - maybe it is time for him to go, my post was about the Chavez in the beginning, the one who wanted to unite the Latin countries. He has alienated himself from them in the last 5 years. I agree with you that Venezuela needs a good person to be President - it's the people's vote and I don't think they will vote him back (which is probably good) - but I do believe he meant well and tried his best in the beginning.

In the USA perhaps, but I'm afraid the fear of sexual minorities run deep in Latin America.

As for Chavez, you may be right.

Wait till they find a picture of you, chavez, sleeping with children. Oh wait, thats not true but im gonna spread it anyways... and this is how lies are spread!

At first, I thought "these people are ridiculous." Then I remembered how Obama has been characterized by the right in this country. A muslim... Not born here... A socialist. We like to think we're better than everybody, but we're not much different.

A sure sign of mental dysfunction Mr. BCHOIO is attempting to link unrelated events in the foreign press to US domestic politics. You've linked the policy of US military drone usage in active theatres of operation (i.e. Af-Pak, Persian Gulf, Mid-East) to some sort of alleged hypothetical assassination attempt on a Chavez political adversary. Truly bizarre stuff... and completely lacking any evidence (a most convenient thing for your conspiracy theory). But that is why you are here on this site voicing your opinion, because without the anonymity of a computer screen the world sees you for the psychologically dysfunctional personality that you are.

You could perhaps redeem yourself if you have any knowledge or intellectual insight that you could share about Venezuelan domestic politics and this most promising candidate that may win the next election.

Let's see what you've got. I doubt much. Just more AM talk radio conspiracy stuff that does not require facts or evidence.

leftest revolutionaries? I think you mean rightist revolutionaries. The radical proposals out there are coming from the republicans... ending medicare, lowering taxes on the rich while increasing them on the poor, ending unions, limiting workers rights, etc. Furthermore, there is no schism in the democratic party. The republican party has 2 front runners and 2 others who aren't going anywhere because their egos. They all pretty much hate each other. Having hate for something is part of the platform of the republican party. And your nomination process is in Tampa... talk about long and hot. Its the republican party that's doomed this summer.

I'm positive that the country doesn't want to follow the means of the occupiers. But I'm also positive that they don't wish to follow the tea party. so it comes down to the moderate democrats vs the moderate republicans. Is it even possible to be a moderate republican anymore?

Umemployment is rampant in Venezuela. Inflation is over 27% last year. Crime is out of control due to the worsening poverty that is befalling Venezuela. Once a rich oil state, now poor and in debt.

Unfortunately, no one in the Chavez regime has any idea how to run an oil company, and further, with Chavez's massive military and social welfare expenditures increasing Venezuela's sovereign debt, he's had to give $32 billion of oil to the Chinese, even as gasoline prices rise. It just seems like he's doing the same thing a lot of outsourcers are doing except, this time, he's wearing a Che Guevara shirt.

Hmmm, Bush is no longer President, so what is your point?

That it is OK for Obama to do horrible things because Bush did

                                                  or

That is just as wrong that Obama is doing these things, just like it was wrong that Bush did them.

The fact that Obama has created more debt in just over his first year in office than Bush did in 8 years, well, that doesn't seem to concern you. Perhaps you are receiving all the freebies? That's the only way I can understand someone not being outraged by Obama.

And Yes, I was outraged by Bush, and am glad he's no longer President. I will feel very similar in January if Obama loses the election. I cannot tell you how much I hope he loses, for America's sake!!!

You mean I have to ask Congress if they will pass my budget? They won't do it, so who needs Congress just let me spend your money, your kids money and their kids money.

Who says I can't? Screw the Constitution and Congress, I owe favors to the insurance companies and unions. Now that I have created bigger Government I want to give them all a raise so they will vote for me again. Damn civilians getting in my way, don't they know. I am the President.

Dictators do not have term limits and do not run for reelection. Love him or hate him, Obama will be gone some day just like George W. Bush who got us into this mess. If Chavez could get away with it, he would be elected for life. That would make him a true dictator.

Where did you make all of that up from? Voter fraud? Really, Obama is the new Nixon? Truth teams? You mean the fact checking website? Because no, we don't want to tell people the truth? What media lackeys, the rightwing news hates him, and the most liberal news is seriously disappointed in him. There's a few people in the middle trying to be rational and saying he's doing what he can with what he has to work with. Congress writes the budget, he spends the money they alot him, learn how the country works. Unemployment numbers are reported by the Labor Department, using a formula laid down by Congress, not the President. What Islamist terrorism against Jews has he ignored? I'd love an example. He's had harsh words for BOTH sides of that conflict, and basically told them that the US will not fix their problems, they need to get their act together, and soon. Again, social security is raided by Congress looking to add funds to the budget, and all expenditure bills start in the House. Who runs the House? Learn something. Campaign finance reform was killed by the Supreme Court, against the objections of an Obama run FEC.
