Subscribe to RSSKANO, Nigeria - The death toll from co-ordinated gun and bomb attacks in northern Nigeria has risen to at least 178, a doctor in its main hospital said on Sunday, making this by far the deadliest attack claimed by the radical Islamist sect Boko Haram.
"We have 178 people killed in the two main hospitals," the senior doctor in Kano's Murtala Mohammed hospital said following Friday's attacks, citing records from his own and the other main hospital of Nasarawa.

"There could be more, because some bodies have not yet come in and others were collected early."
The attacks started Friday afternoon after Muslim prayers and as shops closed for the weekend.
In a statement, federal police spokesman Olusola Amore said attackers targeted five police buildings, two immigration offices and the local headquarters of the State Security Service, Nigeria's secret police.
A Boko Haram spokesman using the nom de guerre Abul-Qaqa claimed responsibility for the attacks in a message to journalists. He said the attack came as the state government refused to release Boko Haram members held by the police.
The terror group has carried out increasingly sophisticated and bloody attacks in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria, a multiethnic nation of more than 160 million people.
Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, is responsible for at least 510 killings last year alone, according to the Associated Press.

Radical Muslims want America ruled by Shariah
Islamists say the Koran is destined to rule America. In fact, the Muslim takeover of the White House is not just an unfolding action plan but a directive from Muhammad himself.
In an interview Sunday on ABC’s “This Week,” British radical Muslim activist Anjem Choudary made clear what he and his Islamist brothers have planned for the West. “We do believe, as Muslims, the East and the West will one day be governed by the Shariah,” he said. “Indeed, we believe that one day, the flag of Islam will fly over the White House.” He then quoted a hadith, or saying of Muhammad, as related by 10th-century Muslim scholar Al-Tabarani, that “the final hour will not come until Muslims conquer the White House.” Another version of the saying goes, “A small portion of Muslims will rise and conquer the White House.”
Many Americans believe this conquest is well underway, if not already secretly completed. President Obama was concerned enough about perceptions of his faith to address the question at one of his recent “backyard discussions” in New Mexico. Mr. Obama said he is “a Christian by choice,” which may or may not assuage the concerns of those who believe he is a Muslim by birth.
The president’s declaration of faith may not help with his vaunted outreach to the global Muslim community. A Gallup poll released last week showed that current approval of U.S. leadership in countries in the Middle East and North Africa is “similar or lower than what it was in 2008,” in some cases “erasing gains seen after the transition from the Bush administration to the Obama administration.” In no country was the approval rating above 30 percent. It’s fair to conclude that this experiment in engagement with Islam has failed.
As Mr. Choudary indicated, Islamist “engagement” with the United States is a holy obligation. Last week, the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), the leading proponent of global Shariah law, held a conference on “Islam and Muslims in America” in cooperation with the American Islamic College in Chicago. OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu called on Muslims in the United States to become involved in all aspects of American life, including local and national politics. The Obama administration gave its imprimatur to the gathering by sending its own small portion, including special envoy to the OIC, Rashad Hussain, Dalia Mogahed who works with the Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, and Farah Pandith, the State Department’s special representative to Muslim communities.
The OIC is currently campaigning to have so-called “Islamophobia” recognized by the international community as a form of racism prosecutable under international law. This would include any expression the Islamists find offensive, which in practice would amount to a global gag order on any critical discussion of Islam. Last year, the Obama administration co-sponsored with Egypt a U.N. Human Rights Council resolution against “racial and religious stereotyping,” which offered cover to the Islamists in their drive to put any criticism of their religion off limits.
The leading countries in the OIC are among the least religiously tolerant in the world. In most cases, Christians, Jews, Hindus and others may not freely practice their faith, and under Koranic law, converts from Islam face the death penalty. The OIC has stated that any freedoms in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that conflict with Shariah do not apply to its members. If this is the type of cooperation the Obama administration is seeking to promote with Islam, then the “final hour” draws closer still. Mr. Obama said Jesus Christ died for his sins, but the United States continues to suffer for the president’s mistakes.

Wood ,you just keep believing everything is alright in the wold and that muslims are for peace. Every day we read about hundreds being killed as long as it is in another part of the world and not here. So far we have been fortunate that those who want to kill us in great numbers have been caught but that could change. These people will find a way to build bombs without anyone one noticing. The deaths of 178 people could have been avoided in Nigeria by simply arming them. I would not have cost that much comparatively speaking.

Corporations have abused Nigeria with environmental disaster for years. The oil industry wants an excuse to take its assets and send in NATO/AFRICOM to steal its resources. Operations there have been too slow. Setting off bombs gets them exactly what they want. CONTROL in the region. An excuse to send in 'unauthorized' forces.

Religious warfare has existed way before the oil was known about. Most religions have pretty much abandoned that approach; Islam is increasing that approach.

Good job. America cannot financially afford to sustain the effort in the ME and most of Europe is at bliss concerning what is going on around them. The only time these matters concern the rest of the world is when immigrants do not assimilate into the host countries culture and further drain the socialistic culture and demand that the host country obey the guests. It is odd that the U.S. did not learn from Viet Nam while Europe did not learn from WWII. Looking at the news I feel like reversing my opinion about the XL pipeline, build it.
The reality is most Muslims want a united world under Islam; if you don't believe that you either haven't been studying your Quran enough or just don't want to believe it. The real question is what's the best way of going about uniting the world: through violence or peace. I'm reasonably secure that the vast majority of Muslims are peaceful, loving and only want what's best for infidels such as myself. One problem is I'm just fine with being an infidel, but Americans are like that, I guess. However, I am proud to live in a country where a person can attempt to convince me of anything and I am still free to disregard it. As long as the Constitution of the United States remains the law and arbiter for our disagreements, the countless brave souls that have died for my freedom will not be in vain. Once we start picking at anyone's unalieanble rights, we are ultimately jeopardizing our most deepply held beliefs.

At the same time, I feel that it is being abused as a loophole to be abused at this point. I for one would consider a Constitutional Amendment when a religion calls for slavery, killing, and world domination, slander and lying.
Constitutional amendments are also the American way. It leaves me torn myself.
World domination is a funny thing. If you believe you're right, I think it's reasonable for you to want everyone to agree with you. Otherwise, why do you believe it at all? From the staunchest Islamic perspective to the widest parameters of democracy, everybody's right ... or so they believe. I find it hard to believe there are people that don't agree with democracy and the freedoms of the individual that the USA gives. Why someone wouldn't want more control over their own life is simply baffling to me. But I'm sure my rejection of Islam is just as baffling so others. Suffice to say, the only way I would ever consider being a Muslim (at least right now) is from the ergency a gun to my head might offer. And for those that are willing to threaten, intimidate or even kill to convince me of anything, I am willing to die, and I will honor anyone that is willing to defend freedom after I'm gone.

If the Western nations truly wanted Boko Haram wiped out, the would co-operate with Nigerian military to hunt down these muslim bastards and wipe them out one by one. It is entirely doable, but I guess there's no political will or financial gains to be had from that :(

At nearly 1400 years old there will be no Arab Spring but rather a " Winter of Discontent " during which the Sunni Arabs will use religion as a tool to threaten and subdue others. Any new ideas coming to the Islamic World, will come from the Indus Valley, which serve the Islamic World as BYZANTIUM served ROME. This East Asian version of Islam could be less hostile to the western democracies, providing the west make no attempt to manipulate and exploit them. The boundaries of Islam have been set and they cannot be breached without incurring tremendous consequences.

It sure would be nice if some of the Boko Harem actually possessed some critical thinking skills as well as displayed some ounce of interest into not destroying their country by plunging it into possible civil war or worse. If every single Muslim in the world was out for yoru blood, or supported those who were, you would be dead right now. 300 million Americans don't stand a snowball's chance in Hell against a billion Muslims, most of whom live less priviledged lives than you do. Lives in warzones, for a good many of them. So get your panties out of a knot and learn to play along with them. Because you know what those radicals are saying, right? "Those bloodthirsty Americans! They're waging war on Islam! Kill them all!" Replace "Americans" with "Muslims", and you get an arguement that sounds awfully familiar. Get over yourselves and find something factual to rant about.
Nigeria has been ripe for civil war for a long time.. the continual rape of the nation by the corrupt government.. the willingness of the oil companies to turn a blind eye.. the secret police death squads.. living in utter fear and poverty your entire life.. with your religious leaders blaming the christians for all the evil they suffer.. it's not a surprise at all that these atrocities (in our mind) are occuring..
